necessary applications
Hey, pardon me for this silly question, but I'm a new user of Macs. I have been reading the forum topics around here and I have come across the fact that Apple installs a lot of unecessary applications, which of course, take up HD space. I was wondering if there were any applications that I would for sure not need. I know that really depends on what applications I use, but Font Book for example is on that I wouldn't need. Do any of you know of other applications such as that one which I for sure wouldn't need? Thank you all so much!

If you really want to free up a gigabyte, toss the /Library/Application Support/GarageBand folder if you don't use GarageBand.
You can always reinstall the OS - choose "Archive and Install" and then Customize.... uncheck all the languages that you do not use and uncheck all the printer drivers that you do not need.
And then trash the "Previous System 1" that the installer will make (the "Archive").

You are a new Mac user. You have ample free hard drive space. Unused files are causing your absolutely no problems. Before you delete anything, you should first familiarize yourself with your new machine. Try out Garageband. Surf the Chinese porn sites. Print out native-language technical manuals for our Arab friends. Then, decide whether or not each of your files is necessary.

What the hell? Come on, give the noobs a break, man (...but "Garagebanc", that's kinda funny...)

I agree though. If you go deleting "unnecessary" applications now you might miss really cool included features/apps that you don't know about. The best thing, try stuff for a few months at least. It's no more difficult to uninstall stuff or reinstall the OS a few months from now.
