Add More Then 8gb Ram To A Dual G5 2ghz
Does anyone know if it is possible to add more hten 8GB ram to a first gen dual 2GHZ G5? The reason I ask is because I used to have a dual G4 "Sawtooth" and I was able to put 2GB ram instead of what apple had indicated the max was 1.5GB. I was just currious seeing how the new boards are able to take a max of 16GB ram if this may also be trus for the early G5's that have 8 memory banks.

I think this is due to the number of address lines in the hardware.
MacTracker says the late-2005 G5s can address 16 GB, so I think they aren't just guessing.

Where would you get memory chips bigger than 2GB anyway? They only have 4 slots.

There's no point. OS X doesn't allocate more than 2-2.5GB per process. Shake can only go up to 2.5 despite having 4GB in the Quad at work:

Ah, I thought it only had 4 but now I think about it, they couldn't advertise it as supporting 16GB if it didn't have 8 slots. The quad G5 at work is only using 4 slots with 1GB each so that's probably why I thought it only had 4.

Actually with photoshop cs2 I believe that I allowcated 3.5GB ram or so with 8GB in my system. Once photoshop uses up the entire 3.5GB ram, you can see that photoshop then goes and uses up some of the remaining ram before ever going to the physical scratch disk. This is the reason I want to go to 16Gb ram in order to avoid using a physical scratch disk which is much slower then RAM. I guess it also depends on the work the person does. For me having several photoshop files opened at the same time that range from 500MB-1.5Gb or so, takes no time to use up all the ram available to teh app.
