Ethernet to Fire Wire?

Ok - this might sound like a stupid question, and no, I don't smoke crack - lol.

I was talking with a friend yesterday who has an older Powerbook. A question came up regarding the built-in ethernet card. Anyways, since Ethernet is faster than Fire-Wire, the question asked was is there anyway to convert the ethernet port to fire wire? I couldn't provide him with an answer so I figured I would post it on AI and hope that someone could help us out.

Thanks.

The question is: For what purpose?

    What should be transportet/connected?

I'm guessing that he is interested in using external Fire Wire devices such as CD/DVD burners and Hard Drives. Does anyone make/sell a Ethernet to Fire-Wire adaptor for this purpose?

I don't really see a reason. CD drives will definitely not come anywhere near the 400 mbps FireWire transfer speed limit, and it's actually faster than most hard drives can sustain at too. I mean you're talking about 50 MB per second. I doubt he's got any FW devices that can actually transfer data that fast, sustained.

That is a cool idea actually. I would like to plug my CD burners, scanners, printers (Mine don't have ethernet), and external hard drives directly into an ethernet network. Any computer can use a device without swapping cables. And with Rendezvous, it would configure automatically.

Is there something like that currently available?

    lets' see...

    ethernet: 100 Mbps

    firewire: 400 Mbps

    which one is faster?

nothing you describe exists and it never will.

just buy a firewire PC card. they're cheap.

You forget Gigabit ethernet built into the new Macs.

Besides, I would sacrifice a little speed for convenience.

yes. but if you've got gigabit ethernet, then you've also got firewire.

if you don't have firewire, you've got 100 at best.

there are all sorts of technical reasons why such a device will never exist, and i really don't feel like going into them.

There is no such a converter.

And if it would be it should be to expensive.

It ist better to sell the old PB and buy a new

iBook or PB G4 with Firewire included.
