hi.

I have a RADEON AGP Mac Edition. This card has a fan.

now, the thing is that this fan slowly destroys my nerves. he's very loud.

I'm thinking of disconnecting the fan. is it possible to run the card without the fan ?

Probably not. There may be a sensor that detects if the fan is working. If it doesn't detect the fan, it usually turns off the processor.

Is there a fan on the new Radeon 9700 ? I know there isn't a Mac edition yet, but will it have a fan ?

If so, I will end with five (5) fans in my DDR 867 MHz !!!!!!!! This machine will be louder than an atomic bomb blowing right next to me ! <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

what would happen ? black screen ? the fan is connected with just +/- (2 cables).

do u really think there would be a sensor ?

2 wires? Than it doesn't. If the fan had 3 wires, it has a sensor. (My Voodoo 5500 does) You can take the fan off, but it is there for a reason. You may try to replace it with a Peizo-electric cooler. They are not as efficient, but since they have no moving parts, they are silent.

I wish ATI wouldn't epoxy the heatsink to the GPU. Most nVidia board have two nice little holes to mount the HSF to, so you can change it if you like.

Perhaps it's more clever to slow down the fan instead of plling it's plug. Try a series resistor to set the fan to 7V. (R in the range of 50 ... 150 ?)

    Could try <a href="http://www.tennmax.com/lasagna.htm"; target="_blank">replacing</a> it.

(The fan, i mean, not the card)

well, at the end I think I don't need such a good cooler for my graphic card...

I have a radeon 32 MB in my Cube. About a year ago the Fan broke. I replaced it with a passive heatsink (very easy to do), and now my Cube is totally silent. Not a single problem with it.

The 64 MB TwinView ATI Radeon 9000 BTO option on the dual 867 and standard on the dual 1 and 1.25 GHz MDDs ship without a fan. Only an average size heat sink. I am sure the 9700 will have a fan on it. Fans are such a bummer.
