Does anyone know if the macpro will include all 8 heat sinks for the ram, or can they be purchased elsewhere if someone decides to upgrade the ram at a later time?
I don't believe they provide only the heat sinks for future RAM upgrades. If you buy the RAM from Apple, you get the heat sink. If you buy from a third-party vendor, unless they customize their RAM for the Mac Pro, I doubt you'll get the heat sink. There's a section on memory in this article: http://www.macworld.com/2006/08/firs...ofaq/index.php

I sure would hate to have to buy my ram through apple. If that's the case, then for the price I have to purchase half the ammount as I would elsewhere. I wonder if the 3rd party heat sinks that you can purchase now days for ram would be sufficient. I know tiger direct had some. I wonder if this one would work
I was reading the Mac Pro Ship Date thread, and I think I'd agree with one of the guys there that someone will soon ship memory with heat sinks (as I said, someone will customize the memory for the Mac Pro).
You can use any RAM compatible with the Mac Pro's motherboard, however, Apple-supplied RAM with those heatsinks will allow more heat to be dissapated passively instead of having all your fans running loudly all the time. The heatsinked RAM is just an Apple nicety that they added to ensure quiet operation. Install any normal RAM, it'll work.
What, did you think RAM manufacturers manufacture RAM that will overheat by default? No. But it will make the fans work harder.
Crucial is selling compatible RAM and it comes with a heatsink http://www.crucial.com/store/MPartsp...&WSPN=CT576475 Not the same heatsink as Apple, but I'm sure it would do. They wouldn't sell it if it didn't I'm sure.
Most FB-DIMMs include heatsinks on them. If they don't, then don't worry about it.
Apple seems to make it that if you don't use their heat sink, and RAM, it might not be best, this may be true in case the 3rd party's heatsink is blocking the airflow, the actual difference may be neglegible but the damage is done in that now Apple has a seemingly legitimate reasons for people to buy their overpriced RAM.
I was looking at Deal Ram and saw 1-800-4-memory had Mac Pro ram available.
I called 1-800-4-Memory on the phone and asked about the heatsinks. They said Apple had given the specs out and that they were building chips with heatsinks that meet Apple's requirements.
I placed an order for 2 2GB kits. Each kit is a 2x1GB chips. (398 each kit)
I also placed an order for a 1GB kit which is 2x512. (219 each kit)

For example, a plain copper one for $11

Or for those that also want a fan on top (of course this wouldn't work for the Mac Pro):

Nice find Joe - but you may want to be careful with TigerDirect - I've heard bad things about them doing scams on rebates.
Its not just them it is a lot of palces with rebates and tigerdirect does handle them. I like tigers

Fair enough - not blasting you for using it, just saying, I've heard they have rebate scam issues worse than most.
this ram has no rebates on it.
The real RAM question - is the Mac Pro quad-channel??
If so, then:
a) can it operate in dual channel mode (I assume so)
b) can it operate in 2 dual channels?
true, I was just pointing out that tigerdirect has some issues.

256bit=quad channel. Unless FBs are different.
Specifically, I want to get the 1 GB config and add 2 x 1 GB to it from Crucial. What memory bus speed do I get: 64, 128, or 256 bit?

They said it'll be here Wednesday.
Use this link: http://dealnews.com/memory/prices/sy...7/512MBx2.html to get the cheapest prices.
Deal-ram links to them at 50 dollars cheaper than just typing in the web address.
I am NOT affiliated with 18004Memory or Dealram.
