I don't believe they provide only the heat sinks for future RAM upgrades. If you buy the RAM from Apple, you get the heat sink. If you buy from a third-party vendor, unless they customize their RAM for the Mac Pro, I doubt you'll get the heat sink. If that RAM is not capable of proper heat dissipation, Kingston would not be selling it to the high end server market, the one area of computing where downtime is out of the question...
It, being smaller, would allow more airflow than Apples too...Methinks Apples heatsincs are for show...no one else has HSs that big, thus it serves as a visual cue, to scare customers away from non-apple-branded RAM...are there whitepapers/documentation from Apple saying otherwise?
I hope Crucial gets back that great 2x1 GB deal it advertised once on it's site. That's a great price.
Edit: newegg predicts a shipment of crucial RAM in 1 GB 667MHz FB-DIMM on August 21st. I can hold out that long, I don't even have my comp ordered yet (still working on dad)
As I said in another thread, it is possible to attach heatsinks to cheaper RAM from newegg. For $10/chip, you can get "VGA RAM" heatsinks and put them on your chips

Based on the current prices, its easier and almost the same price to get 2 GB from Apple and wait before upgrading past that. Sure, I could drop to 1 GB from the factory, but then I'd need to spend a good amount on 3rd party RAM and deal with potential problems / fan issues. Meanwhile the 4x512 option from Apple will be tested at the factory, have bad-ass heatsinks, and force the RAM to operate at top speed since the entire bank is full! Sounds great to me!

No kidding! I'd never purchase Apple RAM before, but if the heatsinks truly are better I'd gladly pay more for quiet operation!

When you select a photo you can the click the magnifying glass icon that says 'ALL Sizes' and chose higher resolution photos.
I have installed the RAM and I do not yet hear any increase in fan noise in the 10 minutes I've used the machine.
I plan on doing some 'stress tests' later today and I will report back.

(plus a 250GB added HD, plus my Firewire drives and some programs always running. The system now has more RAM and is less optimized
I have a few programs that I *always* have running installed including Menu-Meters and Dragthing.
For some reason Photoshop only sees 3072MB of ram available where as Menu Meters sees 5GB. So it's using 70% of 307MB instead of* 70% of 6GB.
I left Photoshop open for all tests but closed and re-opened the test image each time. All test timed with my Sunbeam kitchen timer.
Setup 1:
6gb RAM installed
20 History States
Scratch Disk- Start Up (Stock HD)
Cache Levels 6
70% RAM used by Photoshop
