Man, if this works on the next-gen iBook models somehow, or there is a workaround, I will not even consider a Powerbook. In fact, I had wanted a Powerbook, but they simply cost too much. This would let me buy a new machine for the price I would need to function simply awesome. (<My most poorly written sentence, but oh well)
Since we are on the subject of iBook 700... I currently have my iBook connected to an external display, mouse and keyboard. How do I disable the function of when I close my iBook it goes to sleep, I would like to have it closed when it is connected to all this external stuff. I'm sure if this is even possible just thought I would ask.

In OS 9.1 it's possible but in 9.2-10.2 it's not pissble.
<strong>Works great, as if the machine were built to be able to do it.</strong><hr></blockquote>
Did you have to go into the System Preferences and adjust anything or turn it on? What did you do? Also, did you type everything in word for word from the instructions or did you modify it?
If you want to try the temporary version of it so that it does it only for your current boot, type it exactly as you see it, but only type in lines 2 & 3 (" /select dev-enter" line, and the 00000000.... 2drop ! line). Make sure that all it responds after each command is "OK", that means you did it properly. Then use the command "mac-boot" (don't use quotes) to continue loading OS X. When you type in the lines, make sure to include every space that was shown, otherwise it won't work and it'll spit out some error at you.
When you connect a display, the additional res will show up as options in the displays part of sys prefs.

Damn, that's to bad I would really like to just have it shut all together when I have it connected to all this external stuff but I guess I can shut it part of the way. I am kind of surprised you can't shut it, that has bugged me since the first day I bought it but I have learned to live with it.
I don't think it's a good idea to close your iBook while using it is such a good idea because the heat from the iBook vents through the keyboard, and that's not good for the lcd screen. That is what I heard at least. Also, for those 700 Mhz iBook owners, the spanning worked for me. You have to system pref, then display, then arrangement to turn off mirroring.

I opened that webpage on another computer's display. I restarted my iBook, holding option-cmd-O-F. I typed everything exactly as written there. On some of the commands, I got an "ok" confirmation. The very last command does the reboot automatically.
During reboot, I connected another monitor to it, and during boot, it just had a blue background, while the internal LCD had the boot messages - a confirmation that it was working
So I went to System Preferences and clicked "Monitore erkennen" (I guess that's just "detect monitors" in the English version). Then, the external monitor offered lots of resolutions, and I could easily switch. The only thing that bothers me is the fact that I for whatever reason cannot have 85Hz refresh rate, only 75.
Using the arrange feature, I could make the external monitor the main screen and use the small LCD for notes The moment I disconnect the cable connector, everything is rearranged automagically so that the LCD becomes the main and only screen again. Works perfect.

I feel the same way. I pretty much never unplug my iBook from everything but I've just gotten used to closing it most of the way and turning the brightness on the iBook's LCD all the way down.
Is it possible to use the external monitor as your main screen at a high resoltion, without using the spanning feature? To use the external monitor as the only screen?
I would find this possibillity quite usefull, as I dont need the spanning feature, but one high resolution screen...
I've got a 700 here running an external display at 1280x1024. This is amazing!
Seriously, if anyone deserves to have a PayPal Donate button on their web page, it's this guy. I'd send him $5 in a heartbeat.
The only oddity I have found is that now when I select Desktops in System Prefs, 2 sets open up allowing me to set desktop backgrounds for both displays... but this is with the external one unplugged. Weird.
But no problems at all. Chucker is right, it works great with the high res display as your main work area with dock, menus... and the iBook LCD off to the side for notes, chat windows, iTunes etc.
Yeah, the spanning is awesome... now I can play my management lectures on my 17" Samsung LCD, and take notes on my iBook display, nice stuff. Apple really should've had higher res/spanning from the beginning on these iBooks.
So, Murbot, it's like getting a new computer? I guess that means you can hold off another purchase for 3 more months eh?
Somebody please, for the love of pete, please tell me what i'm doing wrong! I'm typing in exactly what is on the instructions, but it still just mirrors. I even tried the temporary version, to no avail.

<strong>anyone tried it with the current low end 600 iBook? will that work?</strong><hr></blockquote>
I don't see why it wouldn't work since they have the same graphics card.

Besides the fact that spanning is a necessity, this feature is also dearly needed to keep it competitive with many of the Wintel notebooks.
