No, this is not super secret info about The Steve retiring. This is a question to anyone who knows him if he has ever intimated when he would be retiring (if ever).

This will be key to many people's plans to sell their AAPL stock, I'd wager.

I'd say it'll happen in the next 7 years.

The real question is what will happen to the company once this happens. Job's last departure and subsequent return to Apple gives us the only example of a Jobless Apple Corp. The picture is not encouraging. Does Apple have a future? Or in 15 years will we look back and remember the glory days when there used to be a niche hardware company that once revolutionized home computing?

He and the board will find a good successor. Steve is good, but he's not unique. When Steve wants to retire, Apple will probably buy a company to get a new CEO.

If Jobs retires, Apple should give back the shareholders their money

The differance is that this time, it will be Jobs calling the shots on his departure, not being escorted out of his office with a pink slip in hand.

Compan y leaders start preping for retierment in private way before they tell the public, like an apprentice, the next boss has to learn the ropes, and to a certin extent, the Jobs way of doing business, after all, he/she will be pushing Jobs' legacy forward. I would say that the young gun who gave the demo at WWDC keynote is the lead contender (kinda looks like Steve too.)

I think you're wrong, Apple is more than one person, and their vision is already in motion, so there

Oh, I beg to differ. Steve is good at what he does and what he started. He's the entire impetus behind the idea and the company. Lord help us when he's gone.

It looks like he's training people to help lead the company once Steve's gone. I mean, sure, it's not going to be the same company, but I am pretty sure it won't be near as bad as when Steve left the first time. If he does retire, he will have trained people how to handle the company by then. It almost appeares as though he was doing that during the WWDC Speaches, when he was having people give more of the Keynote. When you're fired, it's a completly diffrent thing. I am also pretty sure Steve will help them afterwards with keeping the company giong after he's gone. Sure it wont be the same, but it will be a lot better than if he was suddenly fired.

I guess I view it differently. Those of you who run your own company probably understand this. The source of the company's will and drive. That's Steve. He can't be replaced.

Look what's happened at Microsoft. Gates, love him or hate him (or just plain hate him) was the center of Microsoft's soulless climb to the top. Now Ballmer is a mere sock-puppet compared to Bill Gates. Microsoft has been in the doldrums because the momentum of the company came from Bill. All there is now is a bunch of cubicle stooges and yes-people.

Well, if you look at the history of Apple you can see that a lot of the problems in the very early years were caused by Steve, which is why he was ejected from the company. In the same way, NeXT was not exactly the most financially successful joint...

Steve's learned alot over the years and I'm sure he'd be able to pass it on.

Steve openly admits that he's learnt a lot thanks to getting fired from Apple:

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.

How true. Getting fired can be a great learning experience. So can quitting from an incompetently run company (one you know you could run better, and so you quit... and then you do).

I think Steve is smart enough to find the right person and train them in the right way to continue the Apple legacy though. I wouldn't be too worried about the company after Steve retires. Case in point, (and I'm going to blaspheme here) Bill Gates is stepping down from Microslop in a couple of years but that just means he won't be involved in the day to day business of the company, he'll be in a more consultant role whenever they need help with a new project.

I think even when Steve retires that he'll have some hand in the major parts of the comany for a long time to come. Whoever takes over the company at that point will also have a lot to live up to so that person will be thoroughly trained on what needs to take place in their new job with Apple.
