Type in every quotation mark, every space. at the end of each of these three lines, hit RETURN. (you will get an 'OK' message at the end of the first two lines, telling you that you have entered it correctly)
After entering the third line and hitting RETURN, your Mac will continue booting.
BTW, those are 8 zeros up there, not the letter O.
Hook up an external display, go to Displays in your System Prefs, and have fun.
Some people are reporting that they have to do it a couple times to get it working, but it did work the first time for me. Just make sure you're entering the text EXACTLY (double check those spaces), and don't sweat it if you have to try it a few times.

This didn't work for me the first time I tried it on my 700 MHz iBook with Combo Drive. I zapped the PRAM and tried it again a day or two later and it worked. In the spirit of the scientific process, I should note that I did not control two variables:
1) On my first failed attempt, I didn't power down the system before booting into OF. I got into OF on a soft reboot.
2) On my first attempt, I didn't plug the external monitor in until partway through the boot process after applying the hack. The second time I had it plugged in before applying the hack.
Anyway, it works now.
There is one thing left, though. What I really want is a technique to use the external monitor as my primary display at the higher resolutions. I'd like the menu bar to be on the screen I'm working on. That's easy to understand. Moving the dock is just a matter of choosing "Position on screen: Right," but the menu bar is way over on my iBook's screen, which I'd just as soon ignore even though it's extra real-estate. My desk is multi-leveled, and the laptop is far away. I'd maybe stick iTunes on there, but handling the menu bar is going to be a chore...

The only way to get video into an iBook is to buy a USB TV interface, which will only get you 320x240 input, or a firewire one, which will get you 640x480 and cost you as much as a good monitor.
Would it be able to use the external monitor only (without spanning), and at higher resolutions?
This would mean that you could use the ibook as a real workstation with a 21" monitor while not on the road.
I've always missed that feature.

That's what this is all about Awimoway. Extended Desktop (ED) is the holy grail of EXPENSIVE Macs. Apple is probably having a heart attack about now with a crack team of programmers assigned to foil this hack in the next version.
You simply drag your menu bar over to the primary screen of your choice in the Display preference panel's setup config. This is one of the greatest grassroots coups in the history of the Mac. Steve is probably having a hissy fit right now about this. What it means is that a lot more iBooks are going to sell instead of PowerBooks.
ED has always been reserved for PBs and PMs ? never for iBooks and iMacs.
Regarding using the iBook as a second monitor for your PowerMac NO that can't be done. I overlooked taht part of the above quote. Sorry about that.
MCQ: Thanks very much. Now I have everything I could need. It is usually the intuitive solution on a mac, but sometimes you miss the thing by one pixel, or maybe forget to click once to set the focus first, as I seem to have done when I tried that before I posted.

The 17-inch iMac also has dual head capability but this script doesn't work for the iMac yet. I hope to figure it out soon. The iMac works in OS 9 with the ROM swap method already.

I think you may have misunderstood what he was trying to do...
An easy way of using the iBook as a display would be to ssh into the PowerMac from the iBook, across a network. Can Aqua applications live over ssh connections like X Windows ones? Performance would be nowhere near a real display.
If you ssh into another machine and launch a program from the terminal, the display of that program will be on that other machine. X-windows uses a client/server model between program running and display server.
If you want to run Aqua applications on a powermac and see them on your iBook, you'll have to use VNC. It would have been an excellent feature if Apple had a server/client based display system (especially to run apps on an Xserve) akin to X-Windows. Heck, even something like M$ Remote Desktop Connection may have been nice. However M$RDC is more like VNC than X-Windows.

You want the menubar to be on your regular display? Under the arrangement tab in the Display prefs, just drag the menu bar to your bigger screen.

I too got it to work - but do wish there is an option to increase the scanning freqeuncy beyond 75hz.
Also, I cannot find the file needed to modified in order to enable QE on both desktops. Any ideas?
