This is gross speculation; but having read Apple Discussions iMac (Intel) forum tonight there are users who fall in to two categories:
1. A 17" order delayed and offered a larger hard disk free of charge
2. A 20" order delayed until 7 Sep with nil reason given.
Can I re-commence rumours of updated iMacs for next week?
Funny thing is that the Apple Store website shows near-immediate shipping. The only way to delay an iMac is to get the 256 MB X1600 (adds 7-10 business days). Is that SOP for Apple?
I'm in the "3rd camp" which thinks that the new iMac is atleast 30+ days away. Occording to the check stock method, the iMac is still in stock everywhere which means there's more waiting to be done. But I hope I'm wrong!

If you're only argument is the stock avalable, I'm going to have to disagree. All the PC manufacturers are flooding the market with Core 2 Duo products right now to try and take advantage of last minute back to school shoppers who want the new tech. Reviews are coming in, benchmarks are being made. Apple has to do something, and soon. If they don't want to put out new hardware then they need to lower their prices -- otherwise comparison shoppers will opt for the newest tech for the same price as stuff that came out 9 months ago.
Apple has appeared to wait on new product releases until stocks have cleared, but not always. They have said that they release new products when they are ready, now we will see if that is true.
If the iMac gets a Conroe a month from now in in a new case to handle the extra heat then it might be because they needed to design a new case, though that is probably not the case since they have had access to the Conroe for a while and the specs for even longer. So unless they ran into some other trouble, which we may or may not hear about, then they were waiting for channels to clear.
If it gets a Morem next week then Apple was probably just waiting for the lower power chips to release the iMac so that they did not have to develop a new mother board and re-engineer the cooling or case to allow for the higher heat output of the Conroe.
Of note, I've been looking at the refirbs on the Apple store web site off and on for the past month. The other day there were no Mini's now there are 3 intel models and 3 G4 models available. I don't know if this is a sign of new models or not.

I just got a note that my 20" will be delayed 2 weeks. With all the speculation would people suggest canceling my order and waiting for the new imac? I only ordered now because I needed my computer before the school year starts, I am a school teacher. Now that computer wont come until after school is in session. I feel screwed by mac becuase I would not have ordered if I new it would be 3 weeks. They told me only 1. I was making the switch from a PC and I feel like cancling and going back to a PC.

Have patience, trust me, in the end you will be very glad you made the switch!!!

Confirmed: Apple introduces iMac Core2Duo around tuesday September 12th.

The good is that if they are releasing a computer within the next 2 weeks, which is likely, then your system is probably delayed due to that, which wouldn't happen in the PC world because they usually come out with a new model not upgrade the previous one. Of course there could be some other delay on your system, especially if you ordered it with BTO features like the upgraded graphics, and that is the risk of ordering BTO systems. I feel sorry for you not having your system, but I wouldn't hold it against Apple too much. If you need a system faster and want a Mac cancel your order with Apple and try to get it through another source such as CompUSA, Mac Mall, Amazon, etc. If it were me I would wait and not cancel my order, that way if the new system does appear then you would be on the short list for it instead of one of the masses that are ordering after it is announced.
I was making the switch from a PC and I feel like cancling and going back to a PC.
The switch is a good move. The iMac is a really nice machine, and should you have a burning need to run some special app that's only available in Win XP you've got options with Parallels and Boot Camp.
And who knows...maybe you'll get super lucky and your new iMac will come equipped with a new Core2Duo chip.
I'm wondering, did you do something special in configuring your iMac, or did you just pick a stock unit?
I was making the switch from a PC and I feel like cancling and going back to a PC.
If you absolutely need a computer before the, still unknown, shipping date of your order, then you have two options: (1) cancel the order and go back to PC land; (2) cancel the order and run for the nearest Apple Store or dealer to get a computer, if you feel that you still like the idea to switch.
I did max out the upgrades on the imac. 2G ram, 256 video card and 500G hard drive. Is it possible that this is holding it up and there is no new imac in the very soon future?
strong believe that when others like Dell, HP started to sell Systems based on Core 2 Duo, apple will soon follow, it will happen in september whether is it merom or conroe we are not sure yet.
good luck any way (hopefully it is a new iMac not that usual shipping delay)
Is it possible that this is holding it up and there is no new imac in the very soon future?
Yes, it is certainly a possibility. But most here will tell you that an iMac update is imminent since this machine remains unchanged from the time it got an Intel chip (more than 8 months now).
I did max out the upgrades on the imac. 2G ram, 256 video card and 500G hard drive. Is it possible that this is holding it up and there is no new imac in the very soon future?
Yes. I did a quick check and adding 2GB RAM takes the order from 1-2 business days to 3-5 business days. Upgrading the video card to 256MB immediately takes the order up to 7-10 business days!
So, someone placing that same order today, wouldn't have an iMac ready for shipment until at least 9/11 (factoring in the Labor Day holiday) - and maybe as late as 9/14.
I don't think your is related to a Core2Duo upgrade from Apple. I think it's just a by-product of higher than normal demand from the back-to-school folks and your BTO request.
OTOH - Do let us know if you do end up with a Core2Duo CPU in your new iMac! It's what we're all begging Apple to do already (what's taking so long???)!!

Aha, a maxed out system.
That explaines a lot.
Back in 2004, when Apple released the iMacG5, it took a whopping 11 weeks before my maxed out 20" iMacG5 arrived in November of that year.
Comments
It's not Apple and it doesn't have an iSight built-in, nor the useful USB/Firewire hubs.
I was trying to figure out a lower cost all-Apple computer based on the Mac mini or the iMac, not the cheapest way to have something working.
No, but that doesn't justify a 233% price difference?

I think the two groups here are
1) New products tomorrow
2) New products next Tuesday (Sept 5)
Either way I'm pretty sure the iMac is included there in. I'm getting excited, at least.

If your order was placed near enough to the release date of the new models, then yes. It happened to others in the past.
