  As far as the RAM question, Apple has consistently provided the least amount on their products. BUT, if you go to any major reseller (other than Apple itself) you will always find package deals that include additional RAM (usually at about a 30 buck installation charge) as well as a free printer and other stuff. It is really a non -issue if you buy smartly.
  
  
  
  Now as far s being "pissed off" because Apple upgrades their product. Where have you been? This is the nature of the business. You should buy a computer when you need it. If not, then keep putting off a purchase and you'll wind up not buying any at all. A word of advice to those that seem to think they must have the latest and greatest. GROW UP!

  Ehem, can you explain where you did get that "pissed off" from? My post says these ~Books are really good computers and that I am going to buy one ... and I'm just wondering which one. What I'm asking questions about is probably the sales strategy: whether it makes sense to offer packages that are imbalanced and immediately make everyone upgrade to a different config.

  I too was thinking about the need for 32MB of DDR RAM for the radeon when apple dosn't support dual displays.... seems very odd... and it's very unfortunate.

  • does a DVD-R with 1x recording speed make sense in a portable? Make sure you disable sleep (at least it's optional) How long does it take to record a full DVD?
  
  

  Just a few thoughs ... I will buy one, but I don't know which one ... just maximum RAM and maximum disk will be fore sure!

  The aftermarket price of the 512MB module is $50 so bumping the iBook to the max is no big whoop. I just bought a 700 MHz iMac with the inferior 32 MB GeForce 2MX video and 128 MB RAM for a client and Jaguar runs fast and fine with simply that little bit of RAM. That's the same speed as the iBook. So the RAM is certainly not an issue.
  
  
  
  The PowerBook looks great but now that we have the spanning hack for iBooks plus the bigger faster video RAM in them, it isn't worth the extra money for a little faster a lot more fragile a lot heavier and bigger PowerBook.
  
  
  
  I priced the 5400 RPM 8MB buffer 40 GB HD for the iBook from <a href="http://www.powerbook1.com."; target="_blank">http://www.powerbook1.com.</a>; It's $349 to have them put it in plus $139 for an external FireWire self powered/external powered case for the 30 they take out. So only an extra $488 to add a fast 40 GB inside and carry the Apple slow 30 outside. Such a deal.
  
  
  
  When the iBook reaches one GHz I may pull the trigger. Or when the PowerBook is so much better, after the 2003 cooling and variable speed bus overhaul, I might go that way. But not likely. I don't see the PowerBook as ever being worth the difference in price. The iBook is so cute, small, light, practical, fun, smart, trim etc.

  yes I have and I want to know what textures are going to fill that at low resolutions which the iBook only supports.
  
  
  
  again, I recognize the use of it, I like that it has 32 MB, but the fact that it has 32 MB only makes the fact that dual display support isn't there suck more

  Screen. Any palette heavy app, or even excel sucks on the iBook. Even worse with OSX. Screen real-estate.
