"Opaque" iBooks?

Apple's Knowledge Base is referring to the new base iBook as <a href="http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n75432"; target="_blank">"iBook (Opaque 16 VRAM)."</a> Apparently the "opaque" differentiates it from the previous 16 VRAM iBook models.

"Opaque"? Does the new iBook's enclosure differ from the previous ones? Solid white instead of clear plastic with white interior?

I hope not. The best part about the iBooks and iMacs is that you can remove the inside paint and customize them so well.

Opaque just means solid color. Not clear. As opposed to transparent like the old iBooks used to be.

Though, Dictionary.com says it also means "Not reflecting light".. I hope not. I like the reflective surface. Though, the iMac is the same way and doesn't reflect.

Guess I'll have to see it for myself.

yeah, I saw them at the Apple store. Don't worry though, it is just the $999 model. Also, their hinge is a little different.

Personally, I don't think the $999 iBooks are going to sell very well. Their feature set is quite limited. It was just very important for Apple to make that price point.

Yeah, Matsu posted a pic over in MacNN's iBook forum:

Translucent (far right) definitely looks nicer, in my opinion.

I don't know, but I seem to like the solid white case a bit better. I wonder how this allows Apple to reduce the price point. In any case, I welcome the $999 model. It shows that Apple's getting more aggressive again. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a low-cost portable.

I agree! The solid white look is much nicer than the opaque/silver look. And I love that!

I'd have to see it in person to make a fair judgment, but from what I can see from that picture, the new all white looks a bit cheap with too much plastic. I much prefer the silver and off white design. Then again, ultimately I'd prefer a Ti or magnesium alloy iBook (a mini TiBook).

    ICK, ick ick ick...

The white looks awful. It looks like an unfinished fiberglass gel-coat mold. It reminds me more of budget swimming pool accessories, or fisher price toys, than a computer. Yuck... Imagine whipping out that bright white beacon in public, not since the tangerine/key-lime/bondi iBooks has a laptop be so publicly embarrasing.

Belle, I'm surprised at you, I envisioned you as a much more stylish femme than that, I mean, my taste can be excused based on... well it really can't sometimes -- you've read my posts. But you yourself have never before shown evidence of such poor sense. Is everything all right?

So it appears I haven't been calling my iBook a Barbie computer for nothing.

Well, I guess I'll have to see it in person, but I like the white plastic! It looks great on the iPod, and the eMac. And I love the white keys on the Pro Keyboard.

    I'm the new white trash.

[Edit: Wait a cotton-pickin' moment here... I bought a tangerine iBook and a key lime. ]

Have you seen the new MacAlly iceKey? <a href="http://www.macally.com"; target="_blank">www.macally.com</a>

If you're a fan of all that is stark white, it looks like MacAlly has lots of stuff... and it claims to be scissor-action, so it's more like a laptop keyboard than the Apple Pro.

I have only bought and used one of their products, a 1 button ADB mouse many years ago, but I still use the same mouse and it works like new, so I kind of have a soft spot for MacAlly.

BTW, as far as my opinion of the opaque iBook, I personally think that the picture probably doesn't do it justice. I do prefer the clearer, off-white styling of the other iBooks, but I bet that carved-from-a-single-huge-piece-of-chalk look isn't nearly as apparent in real life as it is in that picture.

Maybe the all-white case is more resistant to scuffs. If so, it makes sense on the $999 model. I think Apple has targeted that to education rather than the general public; edu institutions wouldn't necessarily care about CD-RW or DVD. I can't imagine buying anything for myself without at least DVD, so the $999 model would be out of the question as a personal purchase.
