I know the Superdrive is cool to have internally, but how many actually burn DVD's on a regular basis.

The speed is also an issue (combo unit is faster) ...but if I get an external, will iDVD work on it?

I had a powerbook 500 and an external DVD burner. iDVD does not work with externals, so you either have to "find" a copy of DVD Studio pro, or drop $1000 to get it. For the number of times I burned DVDs (like 10 times), the external was great. I can't see needing to burn DVD's "on the road."

iDVD is SO MUCH easier for burning good old fashioned home movies, though, that it is worth having the internal drive or getting a desktop with it.
