Definitely check out that link to the google search for puzzle films. There are a couple articles that mention some titles and at least one compiled list.

Thanks. I had never heard the term 'puzzle film' before, but that's exactly what I'm thinking about.

Admittedly, I skimmed the suggestions somewhat quickly, but did no one mention Primer? That's one that a second viewing is almost a requirement. Other than that everything I can think of in this vein has been listed. I'd also like to give a strong recommendation for Brick (as addabox mentioned) ... best movie I've seen so far this year.

Primer --definitely -- if you haven't seen that BRussell, you're in for a treat.

I mentioned that one on the previous page. I thought it was by the same guy who did Requiem for a Dream, but I think I was mixing that up with Pi.

No, but Darren Aronofsky (Requiem, Pi) does have a new film coming out soon:

I've been reading about that. Apparently it started out as a big budget epic with Brad Pitt attached, but he dropped out the budget shrank radically.

So Aronofsky started working on other things, but just kept coming around to The Fountain, and eventually reworked his script and rethought the sequences with "smaller" in mind.

I get the feeling that it's a better film for all that, but we'll see.

"Angel Heart" is one that I didn't figure out until after watching it.

"The Machinist", wherein Christian Bale decided that, because his character was supposed to be alarming thin, he would just starve himself down to like 130lbs.

I swear, I don't understand how actors can gain and lose significant pounds and muscle mass like they're changing cloths.

Anyway: The Machinist, definitely a puzzle movie.

...especially for movies that aren't particularly well-received by critics.

    Other films you might like:

    - American Psycho (a movie with Christian Bale that's actually watchable)

    - Gattaca

    - 12 Monkeys

    - Everything Put Together

    - Catch-22

OK I Just watched that Crash movie as recommended by people in this thread.

All I have to say is: WTF WAS THE POINT OF THAT?!?

"hey look, CARS! Let's have sex!"

    "Car crash! Woot I'm horny!"

"Hey let's drive like idiots! THEN HAVE SEX!"

The acting was horrible and the story, though original, was dumb.

It wasn't even well shot, either. Plus the music was repetitive and boring. The script was OK, considering the plot which the writer had to work with.

It's not even good from a pornographic persective. I've seen 'steamier' stuff on cinimax when I was 12. I really don't get it.

    Thumbs down.

Yeah, it's kinda weird and kinky! Remember getting it on DVD when it came out, IMHO from what I can remember I kinda liked the soundtrack.

I'd recommend "The Last Seduction" with Linda Fiorentino, it was kinky and weird with some puzzles.

"Cypher" was weird and full of puzzles.

But I must admit "Mulholland Dr." has to be near the top of my A list, weird, kinky, and full of puzzles.

Kinda like really kinky, weird, and puzzling movies!

Thanks for the recs guys, just the sort of thing I've been looking for, I'm addicted to movies!
