Owners Of MDD Duals Post Here!

If you own a MDD G4 Dual post here what you think about it and if you like it or hate it.

I have a Dual 867Mhz G4 and i'm happy as OS X flys on it...i can start up in less than 30secs which i couldn't do with OS X on my old 7300 PowerMac

So if you have a new Dual post what you think about.

Well, since Murbot will probably busy with the family for the next week or two, I'll post for him.

He's got a brand new Dual 1 GHz MDD and a 17" Apple LCD. It's the first dual-processor Mac he's had. The last tower he had was a single 867. He's SO impressed by it that he said he's actually thinking about keeping it for more than a month or two -- at least until The Next Big Thing? comes out.

Personally, I doubt he can hold out that long.

I don't own a MDD myself, but I played with one in an Apple store.

I have a MDD 1250 with a gig of RAM and so far all the tests i have done have shown it to be one of the fastest desktops on the planet, despite all the bottlenecks and lower MHz than the competition..

I'm very happy with it and there are only few bugs in jaguar that remain. sometimes these are a pain in the ass, but fortunately they don't happen too often. (ie crashing when trying to eject a cd using the eject button, or more precisely the alt-eject button for the second drive. often enough requires a restart... otherwise its fast and stable.

it's louder than my old machine (a beige G3 with extra fans), but bearable, also seems to have gotten quieter since I added a PCI slot cooler.

The more I think about it, the more I realize there's almost nothing to complain about.

    a PCI slot cooler ???

    What is that ?

I have a Dual 1250 too... the ONLY thing i'm not happy with is : The ACBel PowerSupply ! I'm going deaf !

This mac made too much noise (see my sig). It is louder than the QuickSilver.

    I love my 867 MDD.

I wish I had gone w/ a BTO superdrive in it and then added a high speed CD-RW later.. BUT when i ordered I HAD to have it within a week. (was starting a business)

I'm running my design business on it, and I have not booted into 0S 9 in a month. (Although I call that booting into Quark).

I am contemplating booting Quark instead of booting into OS 9.

i bit the bullet and i am using OS X/ learning OS X and like it for the most part.

    Over all i'm pleased.

    Now, I'm going to sell my PowerBook 400 and get a 667 or a 800 or a 867.. maybe a 1Ghz?

A PCI slot cooler is a little box with fans on it that suck air out through the back of the PCI slot you put it in.

I am very happy with my 867 DP. The volume is a bit of an issue (I got a bit envious when my flatmate received his Dell, and was able to sleep with it switched on), but otherwise everything is good.

The speed is not really an issue, I genuinely would love to see Apple regain parity on a 'clock' basis (hoping the 970 will not be too far away), but compared to the Dell 2.5 GHz (an otherwise equally specced and priced machine), mine doesn't seem too shabby at all, and I can only guess at what the 1.25 feels like.

I know it was more of a push than a leap, but Apple should always offer DPs from here on in. And once they get the bus sorted out (the only time I ever saturate both processors is during a Cinema 4D render), they should be laughing, even if they have to remain with the G4 for a while.

[Edit: OK, maybe not laughing, but at least not pulling hair out]

Fast as a sumbich. Loud, yes, but if you keep iTunes CRANKED it's not a problem.

iPhoto is now finally useable with 1500 photos in the library!

^That's awesome. I'm having lots of trouble importing more than about 891 files to iPhoto at a time- nevermind actually waiting a few minutes for the app to start up on my TiBook 667.

It's fast. Excellent on multitasking (Dual DivX encoding plus Quake 3 Urban Terror just fine without reniced applications) in OS X, especially compared to any single-processor x86 box in Win. 350 fps in Quake 3, good WC3 performance (could well be a bit faster though, if Blizzard ever multithreaded the game properly), not too loud if you keep the room cool... but the thing is HEAVY to carry to and from LAN's

But the most remarkable about the MDD is how good it looks

A 1 GHz DP MDD replaced 2 IIsi Macs as my home system. Is very stable as a Database & Print server. I still need to get a SCSI PCI to hook up the rest of my media drives. ??? Does anyone use a SCSI PCI card or know if any cards are better then others in a MDD PM ???

Still Waiting For My 1.25 DP That Apple Claimed To Have Shipped Thanksgiving Eve ( Overnight FedEx, but thats another thread ).

The 1.25 is to be a vacation home system and backup if the other MDD were to die I think I have worked for the Military too long. Next I'll be buying a backup for my backup.

Got a dual 1 gig. Have both likes and hates:

+ the headphone jack on the front

    - lack of firewire port there

+ great graphics (w/17" Apple LCD)

    - noise

    + fast

    - iMovie is less stable, but this is probably more of an OSX issue

    + Superdrive & iDVD

    - backwards compatability (SCSI equipment)

+ backwards compatability (iSub, Wacom pad)

    + eject key

    + acces to the insides

+ mouse (really! Actually use it with my iMac)

+ cost (1000 euros less than the previous 1 gig)

    - don't get to use it as much as I would like to because my kids are always on it. From the perspective of rating the computer it is definitely a plus, but this post is my thoughts.

As you can see, the + out number the -, overall it is a great machine.

    To MrBillData

I upgraded a 11 years old Mac IIci with a dual 867 MHz with a full 1 GB of RAM, two months ago. I'm using an Adaptec SCSI card for my old MO drive (best backup device, IMHO).

The machine is working fine, but it's too noisy. So I returned the dual to the Apple reseller, and they are changing the power supply, right now. My machine will be back in few days, with less noise, I hope.

The Adaptec SCSI card and my MO drive aren't working in OS X. I'm forced to use them in OS 9 only.

DP1250/1G ram/Radeon 9000 here, I'm content with it, not super happy but not regretting the purchase. Replaced a Beige G3->G4/542mhz, significantly faster but not as fast as I thought it would be.

Like, most background screensavers choke the graphics... probably the bus issue. When I open programs, I would think it would launch faster but doesn't. Solder of fortune 2 does not run well on this, I bet its because the game sucks. Web browsing still not as fast as on PCs (using Chimera) but close.

Overall a good system though, but I wish it were faster. Often I can just "feel" the bus being choked.
