ITunes library filing system

Hmm, this is a bit of an embarrassing question- I'm meant to be the guy in my studio that "knows stuff".

How can I get ITunes to play all my songs from the folders that I've manually set them up in with the Finder? Ideally, I'd like any changes made to my music collection through the Finder (the addition / subtraction of songs etc) to be updated live to ITunes.

In other words, I'd like ITunes to reference the Finders filing system, not its own.

I'm a bit hacked off with ITunes way of doing things in this regard but would like to stick with it because I quite like the rest of it.

Thanks in advance for any feedback. I'm gonna really kick myself when I'm told the answer.

Oh, I'd like to do the same for images in with IPhoto as well

    No, you'll kick iTunes.

You can't. At least, not without some added work that isn't really perfect.

iTunes doesn't monitor folders to update file lists in your Library.

You could use folder actions to accomplish this.

Exactly, that's the 'added work' I had in mind.

Thanks alot for your feedback guys. You've saved me alot of time.

What a bummer, eh? Maybe it's time to move to a different audio player after all.

Thanks again, nice to get some tips of a couple of AI heavyweights.

Just instead of dragging new music to the folders in the Finder, just drag the new music to the iTunes window and it will place them where they belong. Sounds less of a pain to me.
