JBL Creature: ANY GOOD?

Posted:
in Current Mac Hardware edited January 2014
I am not an audiophile by any strech of imagination. I'm just looking for a set of small, unobtrustive, good looking speakers that still have good sound quality and a reasonable price.

How do the JBL Creature speakers stack up? I really WANT to buy these.

Well they certainly look cool, don't they? I heard them in the Apple Store and they sounded good to me. Granted, I too am no hardcore audiophile.

My only requirements: suffiecient volume without cracking/breaking up and plenty of bass. Anything beyond that is just icing on the cake. I don't get into frequencies and all that horseshit.

It's just something to wiggle your ass to...

I was thinking about pairing the JBL Creature speakers with a Griffin PowerMate. Cool down firing green LED's paired with a cool blue LED.

LOL! I think the JBL creatures are good, but if you're going to pony up some dough go for those Klipsch 2.1 satellites with the woofer.. Then your whole body and not just your arse can wiggle to the music

The Klipsh's are nicer. The SoundSticks have better specs than the Creatures. Really, what it comes down to is how sensitive you are to the audio and how much you're willing to spend. Me, I can hear the differences between speakers. I'm very picky.

The night after Thanksgiving when the Apple Store had them for $98 I got them (because I had a $50 gift card). They replaced my Altec Lansing 4 speaker set. They're really good for their size. I'm impressed with them.

That's just what I wanted to hear. They're already on my Christmas list.

I ordered the JBL Creature's today from amazon.com for $93. Not bad, but I will have to wait until December 28th at the earliest for them to ship. I just didn't trust any of those other discounted sites. Am I wrong to think that way?

I first check pricegrabber.com to get the lowest price, then I go to resellerratings .com to check the rating of the vendor.

Provantage.com has the lowest price on the Creatures ($86.95) and they have a very good rating.

I ordered the Creatures from them on Monday at 2PM and at 11AM on Tuesday UPS delivered them to my door.

    They're great for the price!

I go to a lot of electronic retail environments as part of my work, and I have heard the Creatures vs. Soundsticks vs. Champagne speakers side by side.

I'd have to say the Champagne sounds the best (though they look ugly imo - looks like a two horny cobras and a 50's clock radio sub). The Soundsticks come a very close second for sound but look so beautiful. The creatures looked kinda neat but sounded like a really cheap ghetto blaster.

How do the JBL Creatures compare to the Pro Speakers?

    That's my benchmark.

    I think they're much better.

Cool, thank's EmAn. Fellowship says they're about the same though. Weird.

I saw that the drivers in the satellites are the ODYSSEY+. Aren't they the sames ones used in the old iMac? I distinctly remember the old iMac's having an h/k Odyssey sound system. Perhaps it's a spiffier version? At least this one has a subwoofer powered by the MAGNUM driver.

Oh yeah, still didn't ship yet from Amazon.com. Backorder city it seems.

What are the specs on these things? Sure they look cool, but I'm a little skeptical on performance for the cost. They are pretty small so I figure they don't produce that much sound, especially for a large room.

I'm thinking about getting the Yamaha NS-P220s. They cost around 100 and seem to get good reviews.

I have my iMac hooked to an Onkyo receiver, the sound comes out through a pair of Paradigm Studio 40 speakers and a velodyne subwoofer.

    Sweeeeeeeet!.

They're not exactly audiophile speakers, I got them to use with a PC at work cause they look cool and put out quite a bit of sound for their size.

They have the smallest satalites I've seen and people are amazed when they here what comes out of them.

Sort of like the first time I ever heard the original Bose AM5's years ago.

Well, I'm ordering a Denon AVR-1403 a/v receiver so I wanna know what speakers I should get. Of course I have a lower budget but I want real speakers, not just some USB computer ones.

The best way to buy any speaker is to listen to them before you buy.

I like paradigms. they're canadian and if you can make a trip to windsor thru detroit, you can get them cheap.

Def Tech's would be my second choice. Don't buy Bose, they're not worth the price.

BTW, how much is your budget?
