Apple sells 1.6 million Macs, nearly 1 million notebooks
Apple Computer said Wednesday it sold a total of 1,610,000 Macintosh computers during the three-month period ending September, including nearly 1 million notebook systems.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company shipped a combined 986,000 MacBook and MacBook Pro notebook systems, representing 56 percent year-over-year unit growth. Notebook revenues accounted for $1.34 billion, up 63 percent yearly.
Compared to the previous quarter, notebook sales were up 24 percent and represented a 16 percent increase in revenue.
During the quarter, Apple also sold 624,000 desktop systems, accounting for $869 million in revenue. Sales of Mac desktops were up 18 percent from the company's previous quarter, but represented only 4 percent increase from the year-ago quarter.
Apple's desktop systems include the iMac, Mac mini and Mac Pro.
The company also said it sold 8.73 million iPods during the quarter.

Still, Stevie J can't get complacent. Apple really should have a sub-$1000 laptop on-sale before Thanksgiving, if it wants to really press the advantage. So, where is it?
The time is NOW to steal even more marketshare away from the PC world, while Vista (aka 'OS X wannabe') is still unreleased and the holiday shopping season is upon us. A window of opportunity like this one doesn't come along very often. You listening, SJ?

Apple has sold over a million machines each quarter for the past eight quarters charging a premium cost. 1.6 million machines is the most the company has ever sold in a quarter. Average profit margins are higher than the computer market leaders. All of this and Apple only holds 2% of the world computer market.
I think these guys know what they are doing.

By 2007 he means fiscal 2007 which is right now. Apple's Fiscal 2006 ended in September. So, the new product could be any day now :-)

It would still be nice to have a sub-1000 notebook. Maybe like an Intel Core Solo 1.6GHz and a normal screen ( i mean not widescreen. Sorry I dont know the whole aspect ratios off hand...3:4?)

Re-read the bolded sentence from your own post, and you'll see why Apple needs a sub-$1K notebook ASAP.
They know what they're doing, but they're not putting enough of a premium on marketshare during a time when its there for the taking. Apple's currently doing a good job of gaining share, but they could be doing GREAT.
And now's the opportunity to do so, laid out on a golden carpet. 8)

Apple could do a lot better with the desktop segment if it stopped playing the all in one games and offered a consumer tower. You want a pci slot you have to get a MacPro. This runs off folks.
Agreed. A minimum $2500 entry fee to get a truly expandable desktop Mac is a tad ridiculous. And no doubt it is keeping some folks from switching.

Yeah, it'd cannibalize sales of other desktops some, but it'd also bring in new buyers and increase Apple's marketshare.

yah but if it is the new 2007 S Class it beat the Prius as the worlds most environmentally friendly car according to the EU. It doesn't get the gas mileage, but burns the gas cleaner than the Prius engine (which runs constantly on the freeway) But this is just the beginning...
Also it uses the most recycled metal of any car, little plastics....Interior is wood from renewable tree farms, mostly leather inside (renewable, more cows) and pays suppliers and factory workers fair and livable wages (union) and great work conditiions.
The Prius has so much plastic (sourced from China) that the savings in gas (pollution) is not made up by the environmetal disaster in building the car. Final assemble in Japan (ethical wages/work conditions etc...) is OK but the suppliers in China do more damage to the world and their workers than if the car was not build at all. Also they basically use slave labor/poor working conditions (too long days) and have no worker rights....Ethically a nightmare.
A grad student friend of mine at Stanford is doing a study on this to be release next year that will show the true cost of the Prius. There is more than just gas mileage so you would have to drive the car millions of miles to make up for the upfront build and societal costs to make it in the first place without driving it one mile. I was stunned to learn this after seeing the Mercedes take first place.
