Powerbook G4 Failure- Hard Drive?

Two days ago my 12" PB G4 867 froze and then took roughly 15 minutes to reboot. Upon reboot, and from there on out, it made a pretty awful and awfully clunky whirring sound. I immediately backed up my very most important files and then went out of town for a day. Today, I cannot boot OSX at all. I tried to boot with command+t to recover the rest of my files. I also tried to run fsck. Repeated attempts at each have yielded nothing but a classic folder icon with an alternating, flashing "Finder" icon and a question mark. The noise seems to originate from the front left of the computer, under my left palm when I type. I assume my hard drive has died. If this is the case, is there any way I can recover the rest of my files without sending it to a data recovery specialist? Finally, could this be anything other than my hard drive?

Thanks.

I would almost guarantee it's the drive. You backed up your stuff? That's good. You need to replace the drive. That's my advice.
