First Ipod due in a few weeks. I am downloading favourite CD tracks. Initially to my internal hard drive. Due to space I bought a 60GB external drive (WD). I then transferred my music to the hard drive. I have been playing tracks successfully on my PC. My music was sorted into several playlists. Tranferred everything to the WD drive and played the music from that no problems.

Today I tried to play the music, often the playlist could not find the file and would not play 'original folder cannot be found'. I had already changed the I-Tunes folder in preferences so that the program now points towards it.

Everything seems in place as far as playlists etc in I-Tunes . Now as I said some playlists play, one stubbornly refuses. I cannot see I have done anything different.

I cannot find this discussed anywhere. I am obviously doing some thing wrong. All I want to do is download music to I-tunes, play the music in the PC until the Ipod arrives. So I want to download it obviously. If I am doing something wrong that download may not take.

Is there anyone with sufficient patience and knowledge to isolate where I am going wrong.

The music is on the External drive, the files are a little difficult to sort out as they do not present when I open the WD Drive, in an order that I woulkd expect e.g. not sorted into playlists.

Thank you

I don't have enough time to go into great detail, or to even know if I fully understand, but if the original files were moved from one hard drive to another, iTunes doesn't know it. When you click on the song, it can't find it, so you'll have to direct it to the song on the other hard drive.

Ricksbrain is correct. When you made your playlists from the music on your internal HD, iTunes makes a reference to where those files are. Once you moved the music over to your external drive, iTunes is referenced to files it can no longer find. It's not enough to point iTunes to the files on the external, the playlists also have to point to the right place where each song is found. You should redo all of your playlists.
