Oriental originally means "to rise" as in "where the sun rises" (aka East). This means the same as the Chinese word for Japan, and I'm sure the Japanese refer to themselves as the land of the rising sun?
Oh yes, according to the Wikipedia article, the idea that the term is derogatory seems to be an issue for North America, not an issue in many other parts of the world.
So sucks to you prejudiced gits with an American-centric view putting forward your imperialist views onto us!
Their loss. It's an accurate term, more so than "Asian", as Booga pointed out.
It's a Euro-centric term. It pretty much means "the East," implying that Europe is hierarchically better than Asia, and that Asia is merely "that place to the East."
Is it just me or did Balmer go on record as a child pornographer, offering to show us all pictures of him squirting on kids? Claiming it's an"excerience"?
"All I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody's ever gone the distance with Jobs, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin', I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood."
Australia is part of Oceania, not Asia, and Australasia is a region of Oceania.
If it helps you sleep at night you are Australasian.
Australia could be part of Asia but yeah some Australians don't like it. That's why rather than Oceania (Oceanic Airlines? Y'all been watching too much Lost)... Generally Australia is just referred to as part of "AsiaPacific" - most people sleep well with this. Also, Australasia is not commonly used. That's my take. I'd input some cultural and ethnic and residency and education background here so y'all understand where I'm coming from but for most people that have seen it, it's a pretty long complex situation with who I am, where I've been...
A great visual -- Zune unpacking pr0n pics goodness and the utter dissapointment towards the end. I think the problem occurs even with XPee? I don't know. But anyways: http://www.flx-tech.net/2006/11/zune...bestbuy_1.html
wow, what a delightful discussion about language! to add to the confusion: if you say oriental over here in continental europe, it will neither be derogative by any means nor even understood to refer to people from china, japan or other countries in the region. it will rather be used as a friendly, somewhat traditionalistic description for people from the area around turkey, syria, lebanon and so on. china and japan (among others) are referred to as the far east.
hope to not accidentally have hit another p.c.-sensitive spot now ... btw: "oriental" has been removed from the article in the meantime.
Well, I'm not offended when a Chinese, a person from the "Middle Country", calls me a Westerner. Even Australians are called "Westerners" in China. And I don't know a single one who is offended by that.
Historically, "Westerner" has never been used pejoratively.

"The Pacific Northwest."
how dare you use that derogative phrase
" DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS "
..
That's so stupid.
It implies no such thing.
Using that logic, is a "Central European" hierarchically better than a "West European"?
How about those who live in the US' "South"?
"Where's your girlfriend from?"
"The Pacific Northwest."
"Watch your tongue! A lot of people are offended by archaic terms like that!"
"Huh?"
Not to mention that any Chinese couldn't possibly be offended by cultural centrism. What's the freaking Chinese name for China?
Oh, and Australians should be downright PISSED. Their entire countrinent is named after their geographical location.
Because a country like, say the United States, has a finite area. There's clearly an East Coast and a West Coast.
The globe, as you may have heard, is round. China isn't on the "Eastern" part of the world, it's to the east of Europe.
And yes, I'm well aware that China calls itself the Middle Country.
