I bought mine today before even reading this post, when I noticed the $560-660 savings on the base 17" alone. I am in some basic classes leading up to development (if only web) classes, and if that isn't good enough I can sooo easily fake a transcript with my crappy community college. Plus there's all the goodies and I get to say I'm a student ADC member. Whoo, there's a hundred bucks that I've never got less out of immediately.

So did they ask you to fax anything or call or anything else?

If they do let me know. Cause I am in the market for a PowerBook for college but I am not currently enrolled in "Computer Science" courses. Although I am interested in software development I can't do anything without the computer first. LOL and I find it funny that they say you can get the discount if you are a Student in college over 18, and then later add that you have to be in deveolper classes. Seems kind of cheap. Someone could go and pay 100 dollars only to find out that just because they are interested and paid the money doesn't mean they get the discount.

Heck with Apple's margins they are prob still making a profit with that 20% off infact they are since their margins are 27%. Goodness

i signed up with the student adc program to get a discount on a powerbook. i've taken two or three comp sci courses in the past, but am currently an art history major and japanese minor, and my transcript would reflect that. However, i was never asked for any of this. they just wanted my school id on the on-line application. and guess what? i am currently using said powerbook, no problems with the ordering at all! no faxing, no calls, nothing. good thing too, art history is about as far away from "developer-related" as you can get.

Actually, I totally agree with this. Example1: The list price for Adobe Photoshop Upgrade on their site is $149.00, I called them and the lady gave me 5% off because I simple asked her if she could do any better than the price that was stated on their site. Example2: Apple, I was looking for a inexpensive machine for my 10 year old, called apple, told them how long I have been a customer, asked the girl "If I were to purchase the classic IMac (512mb) right now with you, how much of a good deal could you give me?" Ready for this .... Ii lists for 949.00, I got it for the price of the 128mb. She even put me on hold to talk to her supervisor. I asked her if she could extend this deal to me at another time, but she said she will just put it into my notes (for future reference) that I am eligable for "Family" discounts. It does really pay to call and talk to someone at companies ... it's sort of a form of sociall engineering.

Wow, I just realized.. For the price everybody else pays for a PowerBook, I got an extra power adapter, a battery, a case, a MicroSaver, an AirPort Extreme base station, a Pro Mouse, and a JBL Creature speaker system in addition. Pretty darn neat.

All I had to do was update my ADC online profile before I ordered to reflect my college and I put my student/account number on there. If they want me to fax some shits, my school has the lamest transcripts/receipts in the world so I could easily falsify one to say I'm in some kind of Java programming class or something. (I'm current majoring in business, and web development.. but all core classes at the moment, hehe.)

did you really need all those extra things?

thats a lot of money for a case.

Yeah, I totally needed the MicroSaver with that kind of an investment, and the AirPort card in the PowerBook would be somewhat of a waste if I couldn't use it with the AirPort Base Station. Mouse is just in case I don't want the trackpad all the time, because I don't have any extra USB mice lying around (other than a hockey puck!). The case is a nice backpack, and I know it'll fit, and it's from a reputable company, so that is why I got it. It is a bit much, but you get what you pay for. If I'm not satisfied, I can always return it.

so how does the bill look like?

I am a comp sci student but I also run my own business so I would love to combine this discount with the ability to put it into my company as well

I know people who've already done this and yes, Apple does make you send them a transcript proving you're taking developer related courses.</strong><hr></blockquote>

    I didn't prove anything, and I know what I paid. . .

I am an Electrical Engineering major. Maybe they saw that (I don't know how) and just realized that it was good enough. Damn Straight! Where I come from EE's are basically CS students will a higher tolerance to pain and a better mathematical aptitude.

You can get big discounts if you're a Select member every year. Just hold out on re-joining at the end of the year until they send you the email that offers the big discount promotion. And, if you buy Apple software, select pays for itself.

I imagine I'll wait till they update the 15" models and then I'll pay the 99$ and see if they will let me order at the discount price. If not I'll raise hell. Heck I've been buying apples my whole life and everyone in my family uses them too. Besides I have caused at least 4 other people to buy them. If they don't think that is enough reason to let my EE magor count them screw them. Sorry I'm in a bad mood. hehe

Oh, over here at my school the EE majors are a bunch of CS flameouts. I'm sure EE would be considered a "developer-related" major." Plenty of schools even have combined EECS departments (Berkeley, MIT)

I think it's a random audit type process. I know friends who have gotten laptops without verification and friends who needed verification. (1 of each.)

Maybe it has something to do with the school you go to, or maybe they figure out what major you're in. I dunno. Maybe it's just random.

It can't really hurt to try (ok, you're out $100 but the developer package is great even if you don't get the hardware discount!)

How does the bill look like? Umm.. like a normal Apple order? I basically cut-and-pasted the confirmation email, which was a little clearer to read than the order page, and included the prices of the items.

Obviously with this long of a wait, it's going to be a while before I have an invoice, if that's what you meant.

They just emailed me to say that I had used the discount on too many items, I only get one lifetime discount out of my student membership, and if I didn't upgrade my membership within 3 days my order would be cancelled.

I guess after I cancel it I'll have to reorder it, and then get the accessories (if I really need them, anyway) later on. I'm kind of glad, I realized with the help of a few friends with PowerBooks that it would be a very good idea to invest in AppleCare on a first-generation laptop model like this. Three-month warranties on $3300 computers suck.

    Poop.

They are also asking me to fax in my transcripts and photo i.d. (not sure if this means my college i.d., or what), damn it. I'm going to have to falsify a transcript showing some developer-related classes, now. At least with the order cancelled, I can put it off a bit while I work on that.

Good luck in your fraud attempt. I hope your con works out okay for your sake. You seem pretty arrogant in admitting your plans to deceive apple. If your caught you may get jail time all to save $500. It is really worth the risk? Ultimately it's your decision, but you'd be better off keeping your plans to yourself especially if you ever think your going to make out with such a discount.

Your the kind of person I'll take note of and steer clear of in the future. Excuse me for giving advice, but I felt the need to inform you since I've experienced a loss of money when ordering from a fraudulent computer seller in the past while trying to save a couple bucks. Now their serving a 7 to 8 year prison sentence. Keep this in your mind when your falsifying documents and entering into a contract under the terms outlined by apple. <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

This is what we call "taking advantage of a good thing." Not only are you NOT a developer but you COMPLETELY went overboard with your order... (and you might have gotten away with it of you weren't soo greedy.)

Good luck trying to falsify transcripts. My order has so far gone through ok (then again, I'm a Computer Science major and the discounts are meant for people like me...)

I think the whole student discount thing is fraudulent on apple's part. They don't tell you that you need to be a developer they only say you need to be a student in college to sign up. Then when you go to get your discount they change the requirements on you. Apple computers are expensive enough all ready. They could at least give students a break when buying them for college. You know other people besides developers use computers. Many college kids will buy a Dell cause its cheaper and they can't afford an apple even if they want one. Then later in life they will continue to buy dells cause they now have lots of PC software. If apple would give all college students 20% off one hardware item it would create a young following that would stay with apple in later years. THE BEST WAY FOR APPLE TO GAIN MARKET SHARE IS WITH STUDENTS WHO DO NOT DEPEND ON MICROSOFT TO BE COMPATIBLE IN THEIR PLACE OF WORK!!!!!

What are you talking about? Apple does give breaks to college students!!! Sure, the breaks aren't as good as those for Student Developers, but they exist.

Those students get the College Student discount. The developers get the College Student Developer discount... sure the student dev discount is better, but they will also contribute to the developer community (at least in theory.)

If you're paying $100 JUST for the developer discount, then that means the membership is not for you. It's for people who are truly interested in coding for the Mac OS. The hardware discount is just another nice incentive.
