Iphoto
Hi guys
i just swtiched to mac (mbp c2d) and im trying to use iphotos now.
so far, its not as good as my old PC system where everything is just arranged in subfolders.
So first off, when i drag my folders across to the left column, under the library, it doesnt create new folders and instead throws everything into one folder. so i had to drag them one by one across.
Then, i cant seem to nominate my "my pictures" folder that i created on the desktop as the iphoto folder. it insists on creating one called "iphotos" on the desktop.
So now, instead of me draggin my photos into "my pictures" and that automatically going into iphotos, i have to drag them across a second time, into the column under my library in iphotos... its effing annoying.
Itunes on the other hand is great. I nominate "my music" folder as my itunes folder. the same folder is where limwire downloads into. so when i dl any mp3 from limewire, it automatically goes into i tunes!
any help!?
ps How can i sort my folders in iphotos alphabetically?

Having said that, when you want to import photos into iPhoto, try using the import function. Are you saying you have folders of photos on your desktop? Using the import feature should bring them over just fine, folder by folder.
The main pane of iPhoto is the pane on the right. Photos are arranged in "Rolls" within that pane, and that is where your photos will import into. From there, you can make folders and albums for organization in the left pane with the photos from the Rolls. You can rename the rolls if you wish. Just highlight the roll name, and on the lower left, rename it. I do this as sort of a low level organizational tool.
If you are importing from a camera or card reader, just attach the device and once it is recognized, just click the "import" button on the lower part of the screen. It will automatically import those photos into a roll.
Does any of this help? Again, I am not sure exactly what you are trying to do, so not sure I helped.
thanks thats great.
now ive got my rolls... how do i sort them out alphabetically? it keeps doing them by date.. i need them alphabetically!
thanks
i just want my rolls to be in alphabetical order as supposed to by date!
iPhoto has a ways to go before it is a good program to manage your photos... When importing pictures, remember to delete the originals because iPhoto copy the photos to it's iPhoto folder or you may run of of disk space quickly. However, if you select and option for iPhoto to not arrange the photos for you, you have to find the photo and delete it from the Finder then delete it from iPhoto. In other words, lots of work.
Film rolls should be a good way of organizing, like folders but there is no easy way to add to the film roll. My hands cramp trying to add photos to a film roll.
Should be easy to add photos to an existing roll, just select and drag them to the roll that you want to add them to (drop on the name of the roll).
As far as alphabetical, Why not make albums of each roll, and they can be alphabetical. Or folders (Vactions, Holidays, etc.) then albums under that (2005, 2006, Christmas, etc.) This will not increase the disk space used, as the albums only hold aliases to the originals.
Once you learn how to use iPhoto, it really is a great, entry-level program. Very intuitive, IF you stay out of finder. Cannot stress that enough.
pt123 -- what are you suggesting about "delete the originals"? Why would you delete originals? You lose your photos that way. iPhoto holds the originals so that if you want to go back and undo any changes you made, you always have the original to revert to. Remember, NEVER mess with photos in the finder -- chaos will reign!

yeah thats what i did, made albums of each roll. It just seems a bit dumb i cant put the rolls in alphabetical order. dont think its too much to ask for! Even then, on the album side, i have to manually put them in order....
On my pc, i have "my pictures" folder on the desktop and then under it i have all my subfolders: "Berlin trip 2006", Copenhagen 2006, Dublin 2004 etcetc and i can arrange that either alphabetically or chronologically.
And thats all i want!
as to all the other programes.. well, i quite like this front row thing so i guess i need to stick with iphotos!

Delete the originals because iPhoto copies the originals to the iPhoto/Originals/ folder when iPhoto import the photos.
Dragging to existing roll is easy in concept but difficult when I actually do it. There is a small sweet spot which scrolls the photos to the film roll which requires dexterity to manipulate. I have found occasion where it is easier to copy the folder associated to the film roll to the desktop, add new pictures, delete the whole roll from iPhoto and re-import (yuck).
Yes, it does import them into the Originals folder -- that is where iPhoto gets them to display for you within iPhoto. That is where iPhoto pulls the images from! They are not in finder and in iPhoto -- it is one and the same file! If you delete originals that you have not altered (cropped, enhanced, etc.) then you will have lost that photo for good. iPhoto only makes copies of photos that have been manipulated and puts them in their own "modified" folder. So, you really only have "duplicates" of photos that have been modified. Should you ever decide that the modification you did to a specific photo is not what you wanted, you always have the original to go back to. Doing ANYTHING to the photos from within finder will, I repeat, have dire consequences! Please, for your own good, stay out of finder!
I don't know how you do things, but I import my original photos from a folder in the Finder. iPhoto copies it to iPhoto/Originals/ then delete my originals because iPhoto copies my original photos to iPhoto/Originals/.
Why is that doing something in the finder causes dire consequences for iPhoto? If that was the case, shouldn't they have hidden the iPhoto folder? Does moving iTunes files around have dire consequences too? Picasa doesn't seem to have this problem.
Yes, moving iTunes files around can cause problems, too. Apple has created programs (iTunes and iPhoto) to handle all of the organizing for you. When you mess with their way, they (the programs) get upset and turn on you! Just keep it simple and let the programs do what they are best at.
Not sure why you are importing your photos to a file in finder, then into iPhoto, then deleting. If you simply connect your camera or card reader and have iPhoto import them they will go directly into the proper file and you will save much time and energy. I think you are making things too hard for yourself. Are you a recent switcher? You seem to be doing things the PC way, rather than the simpler Apple way.

I do not import from camera because I need to organized the photos so it fits into the right film roll when imported. I've tried to move pictures from film roll to film roll and it's just too hard to do. Sometimes I need to rename the file too. Also, I tag the photos with IPTC data before importing.
and how do you resize pics in iphotos?
thanks!
