Is the pioneer a05 fully supported by 10.2.3?

basically what i want to know is that since i have to take out my CD-RW, since i hear that you can only have 1 optical drive in the quicksilver g4's, that when i put in the a05 in its place itunes and toast will continue to work with no problems

since its internal i dont loose any functionality i had with the CD-RW i just gain DVD-R/RW support, and i can use apple's DVD programs right?

if for some reason it isn't supported, what about the a04...haha its $5 cheaper and its half as fast

I've got the retail Pioneer A05 in my Quicksilver G4 867. It's recognized by the Mac as the superdrive. I've burned CDs and DVD-RWs successfully with Toast 5 in OS 9, and a DVD under iDVD in X.2.3. I haven't tried to use any of the other programs or OSs, but before I bought mine I read positive reports from other users.

All you will need to do to make it work internally is to remove the front piece of the drive tray. It's a little piece of plastic that has the model and brand printed on it. You don't even need tools to remove it, but if it's on there it gets caught on the Mac's non-standard oval drive hole.

One word of caution, I couldn't burn successfully to the Pioneer brand DVD R that came with it. It burned perfectly on the Apple brand blank DVD's. I haven't had the opportunity to try other brands yet.

    good luck!

I think he means the actual plate that has "Pioneer", "DVD-R/RW", etc. on it. If you look at your drive, you'll see it's just a plate that's snapped onto the drive tray. Take a look at your existing CD drive in your QS to see what it should look like.

But my real point was trying to confirm that the *RETAIL* A05 works not only with 10.2.3, but with iDVD 2 or 3. ast3r3x, please let us/me know how it works out for you!

I've been thinking of replacing the CD-RW in my QuickSilver with a Pioneer DVR-105/A05 but there are a couple of issues I'm unsure about. Firstly, there seem to be lots of reports at xlr8yourmac.com that OS X kernel panics upon waking from sleep with the drive installed. Does anyone know whether this only occurs with a CD/DVD left in the drive, or whether it occurs regardless? Secondly, the firmware updates issued by Pioneer for the 105/A05 currently require a PC to upgrade the drive, and any future firmware updates issued by Apple (should the drive become standard in future Macs) are unlikely to work as the updates will probably check the original firmware provider. Is this likely to become an issue? <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Thanks for any thoughts or experiences.

I have a Cendyne 4x DVD-RW that is essentially a Pioneer DVR-105 just repackaged. ($135 after rebate from Staples WooHoo!)

I was thinking that the Pioneer firmware updates do not need to be appplied to DVR-105's just 104's and 103's.

    This is according to xlr8yourmac.com.

I think that's true for the update that prevents drives from being damaged when using high speed media, but I believe there's also a 1.21 firmware update for the 105. I could be wrong though.

Yes, I was referring to that little snap on plate on the front.

One other thing I forgot about was that I had to disable the disk sleep options in the energy control panels of both OS 9 and OS X. before I did that I had some problems with the Mac "losing" the drive after it had been inactive for a certain period. Once the disk sleep options were set to "never" I had no further problems.
