  • Comparing photography: iPhone XS Max versus Google Pixel 3 XL

This is definitely a hot take given how committed (nearly) everyone on the internet is to the Pixel Camera. I think the review video is really balanced and honest. Both cameras take great shots, but I think the 56mm framing of the portrait lens is a very important feature that few reviewers discuss much whereas the wide angle lens on the pixels front is nice but daaamn it produces some seriously squished faces. Pixel is better at low light, no doubt. I don’t think this is due to hardware, just they’ve put more attention to their software algorithms for low light cases.
Being a photographer, I must whole heartedly disagree about the Pixel 3 XL performing better than the XS Max in low light, as the Pixel is still tending to blow out highlights much more than the XS Max. If the highlights get blown, there is no recovery in post. The XS Max is delivering much nicer, balanced images, with better dynamic range.

The only thing I see disappointing with the XS Max is the low light flash assisted performance, where definitely the attempt at delivering the widest possible dynamic range is working against the phone there, as it delivers dark, washed out images.

  • New EU regulations mandate user-replaceable batteries in Apple products

    mayfly said:
Apple MacBooks & MacBook Pros used to have a tool-free latch on the back to get at and replace the battery. Sure would be nice to have that on most of the current Apple devices. Sure, LiON batteries are rechargeable, but they sure do deteriorate over time. If you're determined, experienced and have pentalobe tools, you can replace the batteries in them, but you can also break other, more expensive things while doing it. And maybe get in front of future EU regulations by making the RAM and SSDs replaceable/upgradeable again!
You took the words right out of my mouth.

Mandating some regulations for the sake of environment is fine, but this regulation is asinine. Take EV's for example, many of them use the battery "cartridge" as a structural component for the chassis, and now this is supposed to be "user replaceable"??? Or with iPhone, which is weather-sealed with gaskets which need to be replaced each time the unit is opened for service in order to maintain the IP rating, how is it supposed to retain that rating if the battery is "user replaceable"??

This is what happens when idiot politicians start meddling in industrial design matters... There is no win for consumers here, little win for the environment, and just make-work projects for themselves so they can keep receiving big fat pay checks paid for by their constituents, revolting.

  • iCloud outages resolved after nearly every Apple service went down globally

This is not isolated to Apple; lots of spikes in reported failures on DownDetector for cellular providers, landline ISP's, Spotify, PoF, stock market apps, etc. This seems wide-spread and not internal to Apple.

  • Apple pauses iOS 18, macOS 15 work to stomp bugs now

I LOVE reading reports like this, and hope Apple actually takes even MORE time to vet and crush bugs in their OS's, as they have gotten out of hand over the last few years and could stand to greatly benefit from a Snow Leopard cycle again.

  • Facebook's Nick Clegg says Apple privacy moves are 'commercial land grab'

The moment I saw the words "Ex-UK politician" and "Facebook" together, I knew instantly, lying vile scumbag...

  • Apple told EU regulators it has three browsers, all called Safari

These f'ing, dumb ass, tech-illiterate EU bureaucrats are really starting to make me sick...

If they want to force Apple to open up Messages, Apple should give the EU the middle finger and withdraw from the market, teach those asshats a lesson.

Whatever the outcome, Apple are nickel and diming at the expense of their own employees.  Just pay your low wage workers weekly ffs.
Your shortsighted and anti-Apple troll commentary here on a consistent basis is all the justification this site needs for a downvote function in the comments.

Better still, you should just be kicked out to spare us your diatribe.

  • Japan to seek up to 20% fine for monopolistic practices by Apple

Why do governments waste both time and taxpayer money on frivolous matters like this when there are far more pressing matters that require their attention?

I've lived in Japan 30 years and have seen the stupidity first hand.  Every time they raise the consumption tax, things only get worse.  New regulations make products more expensive and less popular as a result. Tax and spend is the norm here.  There are many good things about Japan, but most of that stems from the way common people think and act, not policies by the elected leadership.

Right now, the Japanese consumer is dealing with a super weak Yen along the lines of US$1 to ¥154, which makes things more expensive, and all companies which import (and there are many) must pay much more for their imported goods, passing that along to the consumer.  (FYI, the ideal rate is about $1 to ¥110.)  We therefore need a stronger Yen than now, not governmental intervention about silly app stores!  …
Another major issue for Japan is its total reliance on ICE vehicles. They refuse to move on, thinking they can build hydrogen cars and make a profit. Toyota owns Japan and their misguided leadership is killing Japan. If they want to try that 20% they need to realize Apple simply will charge Japan 20% more for everything, including hardware.
Yeah, no... For the scam that is EV's, from their disastrous environmental raw materials footprint to carbon ROI period of ownership fraud, Toyota is the ONLY car company that actually DIDN'T drink the Cool Aid and put their foot down! I'm driving an ICE car right now and you'll have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands before I EVER give it up, and if I have to, it'll be for another ICE car from Toyota or Mazda!

  • The BBC is advising staff to remove TikTok from work phones

It's about damned time this BS, brain-rotting app be banned from ALL Western countries!

Remember, mainland China gets a version of TikTok that is motivational, uplifting, educational, and inspiring to ITS people, and the rest of the world gets the version that is DESIGNED to DAMAGE the psyche of the youth and young adults using it, this is now proven as FACT.
