  • How to add AirDrop to the Dock in macOS to quickly send files to a nearby iPhone or iPad

    There's a 3rd method:

In Finder do a search for AirDrop.app. The search will yield nothing. Click the '+' sign and then Other… and then add System Files to your search parameter and select Are Included.

I think it's good to have this checked so it's always a quick option when searching for items so you only ever have to go through that process once to find anything on your Mac quickly.

I don't think this is common knowledge so I'll post it: For the AppleCare/AppleCare+ that you pay up front, you can get a rebate for the unused service if you sell your iPhone before the 2 or 3 years is up.

Basically, Apple knows that fewer people are upgrading. So, they've devised a way to try and collect some money from people who are refusing to buy new phones.

It won't work. Most people can do math. They will work their old phone 'without a net' until it truly dies and then they will buy a phone at the bottom of the pricing structure (which is still cheaper that what the plan would have cost them and newer than the old phone).

I wish I had the option for an extended warranty on my current iPhone.

  • Blood oxygen sensor, Touch ID rumored for 'watchOS 7,' Apple Watch 'Series 6'

I read in a review on the Samsung watch the battery life is up to 48 hours.  But, using LTE it lasted 3 hours...

This might not be comparable to the Apple Watch because the Samsung LTE doesn’t require a phone to make calls, but it’s something to consider...

I was looking for a watch that didn’t require a phone when I came across this info.  Needing a phone also was a dealbreaker, and defeated the purpose of getting a smart watch.

Obviously both the Samsung and Apple were a fail for my intended purpose.  But it was interesting in that a true Apple Watch/phone will probably not happen anytime soon.
What do you mean by "This might not be comparable to the Apple Watch because the Samsung LTE doesn’t require a phone to make calls…"?

The cellular Apple Watch makes calls without going thought the iPhone. You don need an iPhone to initially setup the Watch, but even now SW updates can be done from the Watch (someone not possible until last year), but that's it.

I have been without my iPhone countless times and have used the watch to send and receive messages, ask Siri for various info, and made and received calls from my Watch. it's aw wonderful utility and convenience.

Where are you seeing 3 hours of battery life on LTE? I'm guessing that it's 3 hours of life on LTE when on a phone call, but just being a connected and doing normal stuff should get you about a day. Tom Guide's says, "Samsung says the LTE version lasts about 24 to 36 hours on a charge, depending on which size watch you buy, but I didn’t get a chance to test an LTE model." That's what you expect from your always on iPhone compared to actual phone call time with your iPhone.

  • Apple TV vs. Roku -- comparing the two best 4K set-top streamers

    1) Roku's CEO has been very clear that Roku is in the ad business, not the HW business. Consumer privacy is not something they care about. I didn't see this addressed in the review.

    2) I don't think listing "A10X Fusion" and "Quad-core processor" are helpful for potential buyers. Even if you listed various performance values that show which is faster it still wouldn't detail how well their systems work on their respective platforms. In my experience tvOS is considerably more refined, faster, and with fewer hiccups and crashes than the Roku's I've set up and used.

That general rule would be the same for all companies, so why has Cook fallen while others have risen?
    Brownian motion ;)
I think we can rule out randomness when the article states, "frequently they're forced to participate in Sunday conference calls, when other people would be unwinding before the weekday." That may be good for the company, but it's not good for employees. If Apple wants to treat personnel as being highly expendable, that's fine, as those employees have the option to get jobs elsewhere, but it would also explain why a CEO or other management aren't popular.

I didn't see Bezos in the Top 100, but I wouldn't expect to with this recent report.

  • Flying with iPad mini: A pilot's review

    dan4rth said:
Hmm, so Mr. Oglesby is 35 years old and has been flying planes since 1985… Perhaps he became a pilot while in the womb?
The article says he has 35 years in aviation, not 35 years old. 2021 - 1985 = 36, so his experience is likely 36 years, and could round to 37 years depending on when we started in 1985.

Just curious…. How does one in small planes like this connect to the internet while in the air?
This is a very complex and lengthy explanation if I were to detail all the ways in which Foreflight works. It's an amazing piece of SW that I was personally was happy to see mentioned by Apple a couple times during the event, and is now shown on their website. I think this was the first time they've done this.

Adding to what others stated, you usually create your flight plan while you have access to the internet. You can adjust your flight at any time and it will updated on the fly, but there are things that may not "pack" if you're not connected. Typically you'd already have the maps for your areas and types and flying downloaded, but they may have to be updated if they're out of date which is every 56 days for visual flight rules (VFR) maps. Then you create a plan on the path you'll fly which will then "pack" everything you need for your trip like icing, turbulence, and surface analysis layers, and other info that can help a pilot fly safely from origin to destination. You also get various maps showing current and projected weather conditions. Pretty much everything you need to make an informed decision before you leave the ground.

If your iPad is connected to modern avionics you can get up to date traffic and weather in Foreflight on your iPad as an overlay . Additionally, you even have the option of being able to send a new flight plan to your avionics (instead of just receiving info on your iPad in flight) with a quick drag-and-drop of your finger on the iPad.

Garmin has their own software that works in a similar way, but Foreflight is the most popular option. I only have Garmin avionics in my plane and it all connects to Foreflight with ease.

  • If both your iPhone and passcode get stolen, you're in deep trouble

This is why my passcode is 13 characters.

And if a thief has a Cellebrite and you have a dinky 4 digit passcode your phone will be hacked faster than you can say hack.

Your 13 characters is surely more entropy than the average person, but you can get even more secure with an even shorter passcode if you do use what i call "extra special" characters in your passcode. Those are the long-press characters that Xed mentions in an earlier comment. I'll talk about these further down.

If you use the "typical" character palette of upper case letters (26), lower case letters (26), numbers (10), you have 62 options per character, but why not use all those "special characters" that are also available which I think bring you another 35 options for a total of 107 options that work great on the iOS keyboard, which is more than any website will allow.

That means a 6-character passcode would be 107^6 for a total of 1.5 TRILLION possible combinations compared to a 6-digit PIN which is 10^6 for a total of 1 MILLION options. It really doesn't take much longer to input and because of Touch ID and Face ID not requiring you to unlock with your passcode constantly there's no reason not to have a more secure one.

    But wait, there's more...

If non-alphanumerics for passwords, like punctuation and other non-alphanumeric characters, are referred to as "special characters" I've deemed the much richer palette of characters available for the long-hold on the iOS virtual keyboard as "very special characters."

For example, if you hold down the 'a' key on at the American English iOS keyboard (same for macOS, btw), you get the options (à, á, â, ä, æ, ã, å, ā). These are all valid for Apple OS passwords and they're all unique Unicodes so they won't be registered just the letter 'a'. But not all have so many options on the long-press. The ampersand (&), for example, only has the section sign (§) as an option.

By my last count of the American English iOS keyboard there are 210 options. That means that a 4-character passcode would be 1.944 BILLION options. Moving to 6-characters it's now 85.8 TRILLION. Your 13 character passcode will have 1.54 nonillion possibilities (1,540,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) if you were to include just at least one "extra special character" into the mix.

Now imagine how many options it'll have if we include Emoji. I'd wager that some people could remember better with a pictographic password.

PS: It's never a good idea to tell people how long your passcode is because, for example, that eliminates having to try any combination that is more or less than 13 characters. If you're running a system to crack passwords you would start with the most common passwords and then dictionary words before starting from the shortest and going through them in order. Since you told me it's 13 characters I would use dictionary words with a length of 13 characters. High entropy is good, but not knowing what that entropy is is even better. Your 62^13 password possibilities has been changed to 62^13 - 62^12.

  • With Apple 5G modem likely in 2021, prospects for 5G iPhone in 2020 'in jeopardy'

2021 is fine at this point. There's no evidence that even a single city will have sufficient coverage to make '5G' viable. This tech has a lot of downsides in terms of geography and physical obstacles. Does no one remember the issues with getting '3G' and '4G' with a wider spectrums rolled out in cities?

i was here and recall both the people complaining about a lack of coverage in an area and not wanting cell towers to ruin their neighborhood views, to the legal red tape that made new towers in SF hard to pass to the relatively easy cities like Houston.

  • Apple liable for millions in unpaid wages after court rules retail worker bag checks illeg...

    1) Did the court rule that bag checks were illegal (as the title suggests) or that it's illegal to not compensate employees for time for doing a legal bag check?

    2) I'm all for this and have been since it was first reported. Lots of blindly pro-Apple people were against the employees on this one, with comments about how they shouldn't bring any personal belonging with them (even if that meant no food or other items while being away from home all day long) to leaving stuff in a car (where it could easily get broken into or not an option since public transportation in major cities is the only viable method for getting to and from work) to being told to suck it up and that the pleasure of working for Apple should be enough.
