  • Klobuchar defends bill that would bar Big Tech from preferring their own services

For those that have a hard time comprehending this - companies like Apple make hardware and also sell services. All this bill is doing is saying there has to be a modicum of separation between the two. It's not saying they can't offer their service, it's just saying they have to give other services an equal opportunity. Not sure what's so bad about that.

  • New MacBook Pro models limited to HDMI 2.0

HDMI should have never been put there.
Everyone I know uses one when connecting to a tv for a presentation. All the pros are happy about this. In fact, show me one legitimate pro who says Apple should never have a HDMI and or SD card.
Funny enough, I'd argue against having the SD card slot.  Perhaps it's common for pro photography, but I personally prefer using USB drives (as do most people I know) since they tend to be more durable.  Not to mention that a lot of cameras can be hooked up via USB.

Except popping the SD card out of the camera and putting it in the computer is many times more convenient and doesn’t require an extra cord.

The HDMI port is a welcome addition to anyone who’s ever needed to do a presentation with their MBP. It’s disappointing that Apple only made it v2.0, but if it was a compromise d/t sharing with the SD slot then it’s not an unreasonable one. Very few projectors and TVs are better than 4K 60Hz. For desktop applications an adapter is not as much of an issue.

The AI website software isn’t the best - lots of bugs, quirks, etc.

If you are viewing a thread from the forum view and sign in using the link at the bottom it returns you to the thread you were on. If you use the link at the top of the screen it returns you to the general forum menu.

  • The new MacBook Pro: Why did Apple backtrack on everything?

I still don't get why people are bitching so much about the HDMI port. Does it somehow offend your 'Apple' sensibilities? Honestly, who has a better cause to whine - the people missing a port that they need or the people who have to 'put up' with a port that they don't need?

The fact of the matter is HDMI is THE standard if you ever need to give a presentation in a conference and is still far more common than USB C and display port. If you don't use it, fine. you lose nothing unless you actually need 4 TB 4 ports (and even then you've got the MagSafe so you're not using a port for charging. So far I've seen exactly one person who says they use all 4 TB ports. If the sight of it is that offensive to you you can take some silver epoxy and fill it in so it disappears.

  • Microsoft hammered with $29 billion back-tax bill

    This is theft.

The government wants money. Solution? Just retroactively “adjust” someone’s taxes from years ago! A good solid decade ought to do it.

Pure evil. If there was ac actual issue all this years ago, the IRS WOULD HAVE NOTIFIED THEM AND THEY COULD PAY WHAT WAS OWED. this isn’t that. This is an extortionist government.

Microsoft didn’t do anything illegal. They took advantage of the way the tax systems were set up, like any smart company would do.
The only theft is what Micro$oft did.  And the sad part is that a company with $136 billion in profits in 2022 only has to pay $29 billion in penalties for their decade of theft.
Minimizing tax burden by storing your money in a more favorable location (still within US jurisdiction) wasn’t illegal at the time. Retroactively making it so is just theft by the government. Pure and simple. “Adjustment” my left buttock! Microsoft didn’t do anything wrong. They looked at options available to them and utilized them. anything else would just be dumb. But now you have the government retroactively changing things. If a company knew that would happen, of course they’d do things differently in the past. But they didn’t. Because it wasn’t wrong at the time. It’s like an entrapment feature of the government. Pure thievery.

You don't know that "Microsoft didn’t do anything wrong.". No one has said they were doing anything illegal, they simply didn't do the tax dodging in a manner the IRS thinks is correct. There will be a back and forth and eventually a settlement will be reached. There is no reason to ever place any faith or belief in corporations doing the right thing, that's not how they operate. All desisions are based on what makes or saves the most money - period. Apple are slightly less guilty of that than some mega-corporations, but MSFT? Come on, they are not going to follow the law to the letter if they think they can get away with it. Gates' legacy of hacking and gaming everything, always and forever lives on.
If that was so, it would have been caught the first year. The IRS watches big corporations like s hawk.

They are even calling this an “adjustment.” Thst means the government is changing things now. That can be applied moving forward but should never be retroactive. That’s wrong. If the rules for a gamrr we change next year, you shouldn’t lose your trophy thst you won playing by the rules in years prior.
Hardly - there are many cases in which wrongdoing is discovered years later. Normally the statute of limitation for tax fraud is 7 years. The fact that this goes back much further indicates that it has been in the works for a while.

If I'm a pro, using a "pro" device, why would I want to risk my livelihood with ill-informed repair people?  Which is what this article really highlights.
And you have the option to take it to Apple.

Go back to the car example - if FedEx gets its trucks from Ford do they and should they need to go back to a Ford dealer for every repair? Or is it conceivable (I know, this is way out there) that a non-Ford mechanic might be qualified to make a repair?
If Ford requires all maintenance from Ford, you have the choice not to buy their product. Same with Apple. What you want is to dictate to Apple how they should run their company. Apple is in business to make money, not coddle to your whims.
Well that’s exactly the point, isn’t it? There is no valid reason for a company to require service by its service centers, despite all the Chicken Little screams by some people.

Apple can make money, just not by extorting repair fees from people.

  • Tesla wants Apple's help to beat Autopilot death lawsuit

There’s a phenomenon in automation in which you initially see improvements in safety but then as you approach full automation you see a decline. This is because humans need a certain amount of cognitive stimulation to remain engaged and attentive.

In my experience using autopilot this hasn’t been an issue. It makes long drives on the freeway much more relaxing and enjoyable. The latest version of Tesla’s full self driving software has gotten decidedly mixed reviews with some people saying it’s horrible and others saying it’s awesome. For me it’s been near perfect and I can see how someone might become complacent.

Well said! I’m constantly waiting for my iPhone 13 Pro to finish tasks. It wastes at least 650 milliseconds of my day.

Clearly that Geekbench score under 3000 is the only thing left to improve with iPhones

  • New 12.9-inch iPad Air may not be a large-screen bargain

The current iPad Air is kind of awkward in the lineup, given that the $599 base model only has 64gb of storage (which probably isn’t enough for most people, especially at that price), and the next level up only costs $50 less than an iPad Pro 128gb (which is enough for many people). And that $50 gets you a lot of extra stuff. It’ll be interesting to see the base storage for the new models—it’ll make a bigger difference for most people than a screen upgrade, unless the screen also makes the device significantly sleeker and lighter.
Agreed. Initially it was a slightly thinner iPad that was an upgrade to the then-current iPad. Since then it’s always been a bit in between.

Potentially it could be like the 15” MacBook Air for people who want a larger screen but don’t need the power of the iPad Pro but if they price it close to the iPad Pro there’s no real advantage and it ends up being another orphan device.

    Define 'auto'...?
Would you use that simplistic answer also work for automobile? I'm guessing you wouldn't.

On the one hand, fuck Tesla and Musk's lies about Autopilot's capabilities, but on the other, autopilot doesn't mean the driver doesn't have to be aware, present, etc. Airplanes have had autopilot for over a century and yet we're still not flying airplanes without pilots in them. Well, except for the drone category and those are controlled by a remote operator. I'm assuming that if a commercial airliner crashed and the NTSB discovered that it was because the pilot was playing games you wouldn't be defending the pilot with a comment like "define 'auto'?"

I love all the automation I have in my car which allow for more relaxed and safer driving, but I understand that I'm still required to have situational awareness with those automated systems in place inside my automobile. Anything less is just asking to be a Darwin Award nominee.
Turdla literally sells cars with something that they call "full self driving".

Does that imply to you that a human driver still needs to be aware or present?

The word "autopilot" isn't confusing to actual pilots, but it can be to the general public.  But if Cessna started selling "full self flying", I guarantee you that even a licensed pilot would expect that would be a fully automated aircraft.  I also guarantee the FAA wouldn't allow anything named that to be sold if it wasn't capable of full automation.
The FAA requires far more training and requires pilots to actually exhibit intelligence, common sense and judgment prior to being licensed. As opposed to most ‘licensed’ drivers on the road.
