  • How to add and transfer eSIMs to iPhone

I deeply regret replacing my iPhone 11 with an iPhone 14. eSims are an absolute consumer hostile scam.

I've been through several countries in Europe and Asia, and am based in the US, and in no instance was the eSim process easier and in many instances the eSim was impossible.

At least I have my primary US eSim setup, but I would recommend anyone hoping to travel and to get a 2nd eSim buy a cheap secondary phone for your international use (get an Android so it's not a > $500 brick sitting around with no purpose for most of the time).

  • FTC concludes manufacturer repair restrictions harm consumers

    glennh said:
This sounds like the government is getting into the business of telling manufacturers how to design their products so that others can make a living repairing them. So much for innovations and trade secrets!

"Governments" have been doing this for decades, with cars, for instance.

Don't like governments telling manufacturers anything? Next time your device stops working under warranty, make sure you pay the manufacturer full price, because the only reason the warrant exists is thanks to the government. Next time you want to return something, don't, because returns exist because of government regulations (for example, it's very difficult to impossible to return, or repair under warranty, products in a country like India, where the government does not require these things).

You know that you can be an Apple fan without accepting everything they do as gospel, right?

  • iMac Pro cost blows away similar Lenovo workstation, DIY builders struggle to meet price w...

Yeah and 2 years down the line I will need to drop another $5000 to be able to get the iMac to match anything current, whereas with my Lenovo, or my custom build, I will spend a few hundred dollars to update it to the latest, and be well ahead of what the iMac does.

Also, this device is coming in December! That's a lifetime in PCs. Let's compare prices when it arrives.

Finally, let's actually wait for iMac Pro benchmarks, because I suspect the inevitable throttling is not gonna make all those CPUs look so good.

IOW, I will be impressed if Apple releases similar pricing on the Mac Pro.

It’s called pilot testing new features. You need real world results but you don’t want to release to everyone yet. My company does that internally with many ERP feature upgrades.
"pilot testing" a feature on the #1 video conferencing app used by millions of people for business and students for school, during a pandemic?  Hardly...

Thanks for pointing that out. That's hilarious and makes a mockery of the concept of pilot testing.

This is whatever the opposite of pilot testing would be.

  • Apple forced to halt MacBook, iPad imports in India

In a world where countries are worried that the US/West will stop exporting technology to them and therefore stunt the growth of their economies, trust the Indian government (the geniuses who brought you demonetization), to inflict the negatives on India themselves by stopping imports of technology

What will be even more hilarious are watching the government trolls try and tell everyone why this is such a genius move that shows India's strength in technology. And I'm sure they will mention the new semiconductor fab that Foxconn is about to setup, and will fail to mention that Foxconn walked away from the plans to set it up, leaving India with a sum total of 0 semiconductors manufactured domestically.

I don't think this is what it's about. On another site they referred to this as a carrot-and-stick approach, and I think I'd agree. Their government is making it clear they expect manufacturing in India to ramp up sooner rather than later, not satisfied with simply being another retail profit center for Apple.

Which is a great idea considering the incredible history of technology manufacturing success in India.

    Oh wait...

It is a carrots and sticks approach, but it's another dumb idea from a government that makes the dumbest decisions possible (again, demonetization). Just because the approach may make sense, the actual implementation doesn't need to. And this government consistently fails at implementing anything besides winning power successfully.

The other problem is the idea of promoting tech manufacturing by restricting the import of technology tools. That makes no sense at all. Setting up the manufacturing of say macbooks will suffer from restricting the import of macbooks itself.

Not to mention every other industry that will also suffer, nearly every one of which is dependent on the quick availability of cheap computers.

  • Apple, Maine Department of Education working to swap 'toy' iPads for MacBooks

The iPad is just a tool.  It's not Apple's fault if the Maine schools didn't have a plan for their effective use.  Shouldn't they iPads have been secured sufficiently to prevent students from installing games?

Say, I've got a hammer to return to the hardware store because it doesn't serve any function in my home.  Obviously it's a faulty hammer.
The problem is that Apple has been selling you the hammer while telling you it also functions as a screwdriver and a ladder if you use it just right.

  • Frank Ocean's Apple Music releases potentially mark beginning of end for streaming exclusives

Why are people complaining about the end of exclusives. Do you like being forced into paying for multiple streaming platforms just to hear music from 2 different musicians?

They need to stop picking random numbers and just get in a room with Amazon until they make a deal. There's no sense changing the number until they know Amazon will accept it. I doubt Amazon will accept anything above 3% or so.
Is it really worth it for Apple to do that just to get 3-4 shows (Amazon exclusives) on the Apple TV natively? I don't think it is. I personally would love Prime Video on my ATV but if I was Apple I would cut my rate to 1/5th just to do it.
Amazon could do a Prime app for the Apple TV and not pay Apple a cut. They only have to pay Apple if allow subscriptions through the App. They obviously do not want people buying Apple TVs. They would rather you have Fire TV devices and be in Amazon's ecosystem instead of having an app inside of Apple's. All this does for my family is mean that I have both devices. I watch Prime on the FireTV Stick and watch everything else on the AppleTV. I'm not buying content on Amazon for any reason. I will occasionally rent movies using the credits from not accepting the 2 day prime shipping when I don't need it, but that is it.
That's what I don't understand though. Apple is okay with Amazon delivering content to iOS users without paying them anything. But essentially they are saying that if you want an iOS user to have greater convenience in the usage of their product, you have to give them 15 to 30% of the money you were making off them otherwise.

Apple is trying to hold user convenience as hostage in order to extract money for itself. Those are the types of decisions I find worrying with the new business model Apple is getting into, which I alluded to in my previous comment.
