  • A new bill will try to stop big tech from preferring its own services over rivals

High time these laws get passed.
The current situation limits users’ control over their own devices and leverages dominance in one market into another market, the picture book definition of abuse of monopoly power.

  • New Facebook whistleblower claims company allows hate, illegal activity

What is “hate speech”? Given what gets censored at FB, I read such reports with suspicion that some left-wing snowflake wasn’t happy that they couldn’t silence every opinion they didn’t like.

Example: I commented on a decision by the German parliament with the expletive “F*ing Germans!”, which was flagged as “hate speech” and my account suspended for 48h. Really? They have utterly no context and seem to filter posts with a very crude “AI” or keyword based algorithm.

Trying to get the block lifted or the infringement expunged (since it leads to progressively longer suspensions for repeat offenses) is nearly impossible, you can submit your objection, but without any explanation text.

Another time I was arguing a hypothetical point, and it too was flagged, even though out of context it should have been clear that it was pretty much the opposite of the point I was making.

So, yeah, profit over filtering hate speech is a VERY GOOD thing, at least until they don’t have actual people with real common sense reviewing what gets filtered.

  • Apple already included workaround for MacBook Pro notch

Why would it scale from all sides? Simply advertising to a app a less tall screen would be sufficient. No need to have black bezels on the other three sides, or is the article reporting the behavior wrong/misleadingly?

The proper way to handle this is, that the code which draws the menu bar, simply makes that unavailable. Very few apps draw into the menu bar directly, so frankly why should developers even have to jump through hoops for something Apple’s libraries should handle transparently without additional efforts by developers?

  • Apple explains security & privacy risks of side-loading in detailed new paper

Apple can’t have it both ways:

    1) For legitimate reasons they want to control what apps are associated with an Apple branded AppStore, as they affect the Apple brand.
OK, so then, since Apple has no right to act as a private industry censorship authority, they must allow users to install what Apple considered unsavory apps some other way on the devices the bought and own.

    OR

    2) Apple wants to control privacy and security, then it must allow for more fine-grained access to resources (e.g. access to MAC addresses if the user confirms and the app can demonstrate a legitimate use during the application process) and permit all apps to be listed in their AppStore.

Also, there are some restrictions, like the ban on emulators, which in the context of sandboxed apps makes no sense. If someone ports e.g. Previous to iPadOS allowing legacy NeXT apps to run within a sandboxed emulator, exactly what are privacy implications supposed to be?

As it stands, sideloading aka installing apps, should always be possible; Apple can warn against the potential risks, but the decision must remain the users’.

I’m glad Apple doesn’t manufacture cutlery: it would be spoons only, because knives are dangerously sharp, and forks and chopsticks might get someone’s eyes poked…

  • New design Arlo Go 2 launches with LTE, improved video quality

Why would anyone care here about this product without HomeKit support?
There are tens of thousands of more or less interesting products in the marketplace, but this here is called APPLE insider, not “random gadgets insider”, so unless this thing has direct bearing on the Apple ecosystem, an article like this is a waste of my time!!!
Stop posting crap like this, regardless of how many kickbacks you may get.

  • Apple's tvOS 15.1 is now available for Apple TV

    And once more:

    Good news is actionable news.
For news about new software releases to be actionable, BUILD NUMBERS are ESSENTIAL.

If I have e.g. a RC candidate installed, I can’t tell if the RC and the final release are identical without knowing the BUILD NUMBER.

So please, how many years do I have to ask for it, report the build numbers when reporting new OS software releases!

  • Peloton latest to blame Apple for financial woes

Great news! People buy less crap they don’t need and that ends up on the garage sale circuit, collecting dust in attics and basements, and ultimately being dumped on landfills.

A product that someone NEEDS doesn’t need targeted ads, because users will SEEK it, and if price/performance are good, and web site and reviews can be found with a google search, that’s all that’s needed.

Everything beyond that is hurting the environment for greed.

  • Apple drops new Safari bookmark end-to-end encryption

Might be a simple case of documentation being completed before the feature was rolled out.

There’s also the question of how older versions of iOS and macOS would handle that in a compatible way. E2E would presumably require some protocol changes, and while Safari on macOS can be updated independently from the OS, i(Pad)OS can’t do that for baked in apps.

So this may have to wait until the adoption of iOS 15 is high enough, and then be announced as a feature available only to users who have all their devices up to date…

  • Memory leaks in macOS Monterey plague small number of users

memory leaks are a plague; the issue is, some people don’t notice them.
people have phrases like „computers get tired and need to be rebooted after a while“ or „don’t leave apps running, just start, use, quit“, etc. when in fact one should be able to launch all apps at login, and never quit an app until an OS update requires a reboot…

so, there‘s a HUGE difference between not knowing memory leaks are a problem and memory leaks not being a problem
