  • A decade of iPads: The 2010 iPad versus the 2020 iPad & new iPad Air

I still have my 1st gen iPad and it STILL works. I fire it up from time to time just to make sure the battery doesn’t die out permanently. I also still have my iPad 2 and it still works. I skipped the 3 and glad I did cause the 4 was only 6 months behind. But then I’m glad I didn’t get the 4 on day one cause I was able to pick up the 128gb version mid-cycle. It still works, too. I got the 1st gen Air but didn’t like the AIR gap under the screen. It made it feel plasticky. So I traded that one in for the Air 2. I’ll never get another non-laminated screen iPad. I just upgraded to the 10.5” Pro from that Air 2 a month or so ago. Unless I can get great money for these things, I’m just gonna hang onto all of them.
This (and my story is basically the same) is exactly why iPad sales numbers look low (compared to the biggest hit product of all time, to be clear, not compared to regular products) and yet is so successful.  They last, they remain useful over years, and they are used regularly.  Trading upgrades for happier customers is the right strategy to build a durable business and it's why there isn't a tablet market, only an iPad market.  That said, I think we now have owned 10 as iPad's trade-in value is also high and so makes upgrading more feasible.  My only wish - that the mini would get refreshed more frequently.

  • Apple turns to Samsung for new iPhone 16 camera sensors

Since it's now July. I suspect "final quality testing" has long since been completed if they are going to be used in the 16 models.
If the author meant to say that Samsung has delivered sensors for production and that inventory is going through normal quality inspection of incoming materials, that would be different.
I think mike1 is right but maybe (maybe?) the idea is that Sony is the sole supplier today and Samsung is being approved now and will become a second supplier later in the 16 run.  But it seems very late to be adding a second supplier for a product that will be released in a few months.  This is especially the case as I would imagine it is the initial ramp where suppliers have the hardest time meeting demand, not six months into production.

  • Apple spent $64.8 million on paid search ads in 2020, ranking 12th overall

What search ads is Alphabet buying?
This (the report, not your question) is wacky.  It's almost as if they are confusing cases where Alphabet is the nominal buyer of space from a site (through its ad exchange) but the real buyer is the person who contracted through Alphabet.

  • How to add an email account to Apple Mail on Mac or iOS

Anyone having a problem on Mail in MacOS for Microsoft email addresses where the Mac has trouble logging in?

It's a weird (and relatively new) problem.  You get an alert from Mail that the password is wrong and when you enter the password (including a newly generated app password) you usually still can't log in.  BUT NOT ALWAYS.  It would make more sense if it didn't work but the weird thing is that, one out five times, it does work.  And then it fails again - usually after a few hours but sometimes as long as a day.  It doesn't matter where you enter the password (in the Mail app or in Internet Accounts in system settings).

  • Finding a perfectly sized Apple Watch band may get easier in the future

I never understood why Apple didnt start with asking me what Apple Watch size / band I currently use. Cant be too hard for them to figure out which size braided solo loop for me to buy if I have a 44mm watch with L sport band on the third hole. Users who dont currently own an Apple Watch can be prompted to borrow a friends or start with household items. This seems like an over complication of a simple problem.
This is exactly right and, I think, actually how the printable paper bands work (I vaguely recall that the sizes match up with the sport band's adjustment holes).  Maybe the L v S/M created too much confusion...

  • What's next for Apple in 2016: New features & apps for Apple TV

Or maybe just get the bugs out of TVOS. As a simple example, using Siri to navigate a video will often paralyze the touchpad and require putting the system to sleep to restore the remote's functionality. And maybe they should change the sample screen image to remove Afterpulse which is still not released.
