I've heard that the PB checks up on RAM at Start-Up so if you have a good amount of RAM, it'll take some time. In any case, I rarely shut down my PB, preferring to go into SLEEP mode.

The AL outer covering is more resistant to scratches but I always felt that if my notebook didn't have any scratches, I wasn't really using it that much. It's kinda like a good leather sofa/chair - the scratches are part of the outer 'decor...'
