You could easily create a smart mailbox which only shows unread messages.

Find the Garage Band songs in your iTunes library and delete them. You'll be given the choice of deleting them from the library or moving them to the Trash. Choose just to remove them from your library.

Depends on the model you have. For most iPods you hold down the play button for about 3-5 seconds. For the iPod Touch I believe you need to hold the 'lock' button down for a couple of seconds, then swipe the shut down button on the screen.
