Can't say it's happend to me. I'm using external speakers for the iMac though. Is the sound coming from the speakers, or from inside the iMac? If the sound stops after playing music in iTunes then it could be a software issue.

Go into your System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement. Make sure to switch off "Mirror Displays" because otherwise both screens will try to use 1280x800. With mirroring off, you can set the resolution of each screen independently.
