  • Jeez, calm down people! It's just a BETA! I'm sure this will be fixed by the time 10.0 is released. Oh, wait...
  • Hey, anyone remember this one from AI's distant past? May 2001! IIRC, it was created in response to one of the then-popular AI instigat--...er, "sources" But I don't remember the name now. (No, not WorkerBee, not Kormac...hrm, anyone?)

  • [quote]buggy .menus can freeze up or crash the whole window server I'm not sure where you heard that, but menu extras are loaded by the SystemUIServer, not the window server.
  • [quote]Is something like this what you're looking for? That description was a little tame, but you're at least headed in the right direction But I'd include a bunch of whizzy new features in both the browser and spatial parts that'd make user…
  • [quote]hat is not my reaction at all, and it's surprising to me that you see it that way. Nor do I think having the Finder act like Mozilla equals vision in any way. (iTunes, on the other hand... But we'll no doubt have to wait for the FS revamp for…
  • [quote]Has the evolution of computing away from what I'll call a 'single user disconnected' mode and toward a 'multi user networked' mode been the real reason that Apple has gone from spatial to browser with the Finder? If that is their motivatio…
  • [quote]John, is siracusa@arstechnia.com your correct address? Using the link provided in your article, I tried to send you a message around 1:20 AM EST last night saying that Apple's new font is Adobe Myriad, but I got an error message back There…
  • [quote]What specific examples from a web browser would you like to see from a web browser folded into the Finder? How about history menus on back and forward, bookmarks, "open link in new window" (well, "folder" I guess :-) modifier keys, tabbed …
  • [quote]What I think is left out in your reviews, however, is that many people who have thought long and hard about user interface are arriving at the conclusion that spatial navigation is not perfect, and in some significant ways has not aged well. …
  • [quote]On more subjective matters like UI, though, he can be frustrating. I still can't shake the feeling that he's someone closes all the toolbars, goes to list view, and tries to use the OS X Finder like it's the (imo) always-spatial-but-jump-thro…
  • [quote]Yes OS X MUST be getting better if JCS has time to devote a page to Menu API's. ...or perhaps I've already covered all the bad parts in earlier articles? Anyway, I was indeed thinking of IE's PNG configuration problems on OS X, but…
  • [quote]OS X has this annoying thing where when you move around with the text cursor, its invisible until you stop moving I filed a bug for this a long time ago, and it was flagged as a duplicate even back then. So Apple has known about this for …
  • Well, I just tried it again and it worked, so I dunno what's up... [code]# wget -q

  • I built Apache 2 "out of the box" on OS X with no problems or tweaks of any kind, and it ran fine (with the standard complement of modules--no mod_perl, PHP, etc.) Are you sure you downloaded the release version? (2.0.35, IIRC)

  • [quote]IF you do have a skill enough administrator to use the proposed metadata, what's the point? They would equally be able to handle the 'Windows' way as easily, thus very wouldn't care less. What "skill" is required? The OS has the "skill." …
  • [quote]Welcome to the forums, Mr. Siracusa. You mean welcome back, and I should be the one saying it to you [quote]Glad to have someone as respected as you here. Bah, can someone just tell me if there'll be a new tower case at MWSF o…
  • [quote]It probably would have diluted the impact of his proposal, but I wish he had mentioned the file path issue as well... that one just pisses me off to no end. Me too, and there is some mention of it in there, mostly just because it was in th…
  • [quote]"Second, if she did ever try to FTP a file named "My Letter" somewhere, the Mac would not only warn her (but in much nicer non-technical language, of course), but offer to fix the situation for her by appending the appropriate extension based…
  • [quote]John, do you have a general date in mind that you plan to officially send all this to Apple? I was hoping for 10,000 signatures, but I'm not sure we're going to make that any time soon. I'm thinking of sending it off as early as Monday. …
  • [quote]Apple seems to have rewrote it because of the developer input. Sorry, I thought "it" referred to the Aqua human interface guidelines, not the now-infamous TNxxx. That said, the main developer objections to the technote centered on the a…
