  • There won't be a live video feed. Engadget will have text updates. It's supposedly tight attendance. The video, if there is one, will probably be up by dinner time on the East Coast. Mac Rumors wasn't invited, so they won't have a text updat…
  • Top end will have 2 GB 22 inch monitor isn't gonna happen - no res change over 20 incher, and splits the bulk-order for apple. It'll either be 20 or 22, not both. For GPUs, I'd guess x2300s in the lower ones, and 8400s in the top end, with th…
  • Don't count on Apple to have quality displays. Like .Mac, the displays have really languished in the last year or two. They're double the price of the competition. I would buy from someone else, like Samsung or BenQ, since they'll use the exact s…
  • The chipset used in the Mac Pro allows something like 42 PCIe lanes, so Apple could in theory have dual x16 if they wanted to. Instead, they have the (pretty freaking awesome) lane-switching thing that basically lets you have a x16, an x8, and 2 x4…

  • Clearly I missed that thread about the hv20 with the MBP. Now I feel kind of stupid...
  • I also have a U3 and went through this very same thing (and borrowed a room mate's computer to erase the stuff). What really irks me about it is the fact that the flash drives are listed as Mac-compatible. My thing is this: "If you say you're M…

  • The Macbook will be updated in the September/October time-frame. It'll be updated after the iPod promotion is over. Penryn is due out end of this year or early next, so MWSF for MBPs makes sense.
  • Quote: Whatever happens, Apple must raise its desktop sales. Not necessarily. Apple's laptop sales growth is more than making up for slower desktop sales, and the desktop -> laptop transition is happening across the industry. If Apple's des…
  • My thoughts: Whatever it is will probably not involve a laptop update during education iPod promotion. Since MB and MBP sales are strong during the mid-June to mid-September timeframe, there's little incentive to update them pre-Paris. However,…

  • It's really not designed for it, but VLC (videolan.org) can do conversion, and can to queueing. However, compared to Handbrake, it has a lot fewer options on export. It is, however, ungodly fast. I haven't had problems with it, but YMMV.
