remove the ~/Library/Caches folder to the trash, run disk first aid from the install cd that came with your computer. get back to us.

go to the blue apple, system preferences, universal access, under the seeing tab slide the "enhance contrast" slider back to normal. if this is not your issue, can you specify more on when this started happening, etc.

Icon issues can also belong to bad cache. Remove your ~/Library/Caches folder, and any related cache (only related) in /Library/Caches.

Should be able to use Garageband if the iLife came with your mac.. Check your documentation. If all else fails, try versiontracker.com to search for such software.
