I don;t know what you machine is config'd like but if you started out with as much of the original as possible and add the extras on at a week at a time for example. Dobby.

Your DVD will be fine. The verify during the install phase checks the DVD's integrity. It doesn't sound like a dodgy disk block as the same error has happened on a different disk. I would put back the original 'apple' ram if you have it and tr…

If you have a spare disk I'd install Tiger fresh and see how that works. Tiger should crap out during the install if hardware or ram is suspect. If your system had been running fine with all those upgrades for a month or two then it might be a corr…

Are you burning them as an mp3(music) cd? Dobby.

Was the 'unavailable' partition created on a mac? Has it every been mounted on a mac? Dobby.

If you boot from your 10.3 cd, can you see any other startup drives apart from the cd-rom? If you can't then try a repair permissions from disk utility which will be on the file menu from the booted cd as well. If you can't boot from cd then r…

Rest a descent magnet on the chips on the motherboard. Ta Da! One Screwed mac! Water does a similar job but its a bit dangerous. A square 9v battery held across the side of some of the legs also is a damaging but hard to trace fault. Dobby.

You've lost your startup point. Boot from your 10.3 disk and under File choose startup disk. Turn on the mac, after the bing, try holding down the option key (the middle key at the bottom left of the keyboard)EDIT: This will give a a list of boota…

Put an incorrect memory module in or reverse it. The motherboard will smell funny. Or take the heatsink of the cpu and run like that for a while (need to use CPU so use Safari (ha ha!)). Bend a paper clip to an L shape and run it over the legs o…

Sorry guys, I left out that we use Helios (OPI app) on our MAC server. Helios changes the way resource forks are recorded so that when they are copied to an NFS share the resource fork is copied in a file format in a sub dir of the original. Dobb…

Samba retains no metadata. I use Fedora machines as samba servers to PC's and Macs. To retain the metadata I do the following. Mount the nfsshare on a mac. Copy the data on the mac to the nfsshare. Export the nfsshare as a smb share as well.…

Now that must be the question of the year! Easy on window just share the drive. On some unixes just share /cdrom On OSX I don't think you can as OS X has no single mount point for just CDs but uses the rather silly /Volume/CD_NAME. The /Volume…

Use Samba. Its easy to setup and allows unix/mac and pc to see it. Dobby.

Oh Yes. You can then download mac the ripper or popcorn (or whatever) and then burn a backup of your purchased dvd to a new one. Dobby.

I do this all the time as I don't want to set my PB's DVD drive to a specific region (Bastards!). I put in the dvd, when I see the icon on the desktop I press control and drag the icon to a folder and it copied the dvd there. Now I open DVD Player…

Here is a link with a pretty good expaination of TV/Video Resolution. http://members.aol.com/ajaynejr/vidres.htm Dobby.

All TV's (whether HDTV or not) have a resolution of 640x480 when hooked up to a computer. I've heard some people say that they have had 800x600 but I've never seen it. Now a 30" Mac monitor would provide a much better resolution. If you could get…

If new mac mini's come out and are a tad better than the current range (better graphics) then I'll get the top CPU modle and add a better HD myself (unless they also start using the 7800 Hitachis). I hope they also drop LCD prices. Dobby.
