I got it to work. I can make the cursor disappear in 9 now. I left in the watch cursor (so that you can tell when your computer's working), but I could just as easily take that out as well, just tell me what you'd like. If you'll give me an email…

That's an interesting problem. I'm not sure about X, but 9 just might be possible. There are numerous extension hacks that turn your cursor into something ELSE, but I haven't found any that make it disappear. The different cursors can be seen wit…

FTP is a good solution. I have yet to try it on Mac OS X, but I can tell you that is works great on our Linux server. It's very convenient and easy to use (except when the school connection decides that all ports other than 80 and 443 can only lea…

Anybody tried Gauge Pro from Newer Technology?

There are a few things you can do to alleviate the space problem on your OS X partition. You should be able to move everything except the System and Library folders (and, of course, the invisible system files) to a different partition. This requir…

David, it sounds like you either have older drivers or an incomplete install. I would recommend downloading the latest drivers and tools from the HP web site (http://www.hp.com). You should have a popup menu below "Presets" that initially says "Co…

I believe the setting you are looking for is in the "Print" dialog, not the "Page Setup". There should be a "Paper Type/Quality" panel under the settings popup menu. Once you get there, things should start looking familiar.

Does anybody know if you can play DVD files even without a DVD-ROM drive (after, say, copying it over a network)? It seems to me that would be useful for older laptops, for which large hard drives are easier to come by than DVD-ROM drives.

I haven't had that exact problem, but I have seen similar things. My Mac OS X refused to read another drive on several occasions, due to a corrupted B Tree node. The solution for this, and many other problems, was Alsoft's DiskWarrior, a disk repa…

I have had excellent experiences with Maxtor drives. I put a 60GB Maxtor 5400rpm in my mom's iMac DV+, and am glad I did. The drive is very quiet, reliable, and (of course) large enough OS X and all her movie-making stuff. We also have a database…

If you still have the original .mpg, would it be possible to export the sound from that as an mp3?

It was probably the syncing that did it. UNIX time starts at January 1, 1970. If you look at that uptime, that's what it lists your computer as starting at (not that bad for a Macintosh, eh? only about twice as long as they've existed at all). My…

Well, my Mac OS X box's uptime isn't that impressive, a little under a day now. I keep restarting for one reason or another. I do, however, have a Power Macintosh 6100/60AV running Yellow Dog Linux that's been up for forever: 3:24pm up 180 days,…

One thing I'd really like to see is full support for my beige G3s A/V card. It still does stereo minijack, but that sounds pretty sad compared to the RCA connectors, and I haven't seen anything that would even kind of work with the video connection…
