Hmm... that's odd that an iBook would be faster on tests 1, 2, and 5. Were you doing stuff in other programs when you did this? The memory operations were much better on the MDD machine, but still 3x slower than a dual Pentium III.

It looks like the tests are all proportionally faster on your computer due to the clockspeed change, except for test 1 which is accelerated by more than just clockspeed. There must have been some significant improvement to the G3 to cause that. I no…

One idea... If people are going to post things like this, it would be wise to also post how to turn things like this off.

My clock battery died back when I was still using 10.2.2, so I would have never noticed such a problem in 10.2.4...

I'm thinking of getting the book "OS X in a nutshell" to pick up some of the unix stuff I'm missing out on, but, overall, you will not need a book to learn how to use the OS. I'd get a computer now if you want or need a computer now. However, I d…

I thought of the multiple desktop/cube idea back when Quartz Extreme was first announced and the Keynote demo made me think that maybe Apple is thinking along those lines. Perhaps it will happen in the future. It think the best interface would…

I always thought it was equivalent to the hourglass cursor you get on windows and it just means that the particular application getting the beach ball is just busy, probably waiting on IO or something. I normally get the beach ball when clicking the…

you can install it onto your system anyway... However, if you start sending a lot of encrypted e-mail messages, you'll start getting funny phone calls and e-mails from people "recommending that you don't use encrypted e-mail"

Thanks, applenut, I was trying to say the same thing. I hope the thread starter reads that.

Can you use the 20" display on that computer? I didn't think the 350Mhz G4s had ADC... It will run fine, but I don't think it will be as responsive as OS 9 until 10.3.

I think the fact that Apple is taking their time on this update makes a positive statement for OS X. It means the OS is in good shape, and they don't need to rush anything out to make it better. If they aren't rushing, they're doing it right and tha…

... wonder why people think the difference in decimal point affects how big or small an update it really is.

... buy it, install it on my PowerBook, and hope I am able to finally see the true power of a 400Mhz G3.

how do you send those logs to apple, and where are they found?

you don't need to be root to sudo things...

Replies to bits and pieces of the conversations above: I believe non OOP programming is called "procedural" I believe the object oriented concepts make much more sense and are much better implemented in ObjC than in Java or C++. PHP will gi…

I'm looking forward to 10.3 where I probably won't have a separate 9 install anymore. I have no use for it, and at the university where art students are issued iBooks, OS 9 is what causes all of the problems.

For someone who's never used a mac before, X is much easier to use. It runs sufficiently fast on my 400Mhz G3, and gets faster with each update. Applications don't hog the system anymore, so I can do something else while one app is loading. I'm d…
