In theory, any other app should be able to use the central address book, so a future - hypothetical - version of outlook express for OSX might use it, or a reminder app such as iCal might call up a picture of the person you're meeting and so on.

Utter rubbish. At my company we have four OSX users: Although we all ordered OSX 10.2 mine turned up first and after I installed it everyone else couldn't wait for their Discs and installed my copy. No problems. no polling, no nothing.

They look like Stock images to me, rather than Wallpaper, and were probably matted into the images, as photographs of actual screens can have unwanted reflections and look a bit washed out.
