I've noticed my iPhone 4 heats up way more than usual since 4.3.1, and possibly as a result, the battery is also dying significantly quicker.

There's lots of ways they could cut costs to make an unsubsidized iPhone. No retina display, use a lower-end rear camera, if iPhone 5 is to get a bigger screen then keep the same 3.5", ditto on LTE, etc. It would also make an excellent differentiato…

I'm guessing it's US only? Appears to be missing in the Canadian App Store.

Actually the description of the Smart Cover makes me a lot more interested if I take the iPad plunge, particularly being able to fold back so it'll remain attached even when held like a magazine.

Isn't it more likely that these are just a new round of iPhone 4 cases?

While the Smart Cover is probably the most clever invention of the last several decades, I would personally prefer the old case. The new one appears to lack a "open and hold in your hands, but don't detach the cover" mode.

I can see them not including support for it in software for a while, until people can agree more on a way to go about it, but there's no reason not to include the hardware chip for now, so that in the future it can be enabled.
