  • So I can't use RAID-5, then? I was hoping to use three 250-300Gb drives to make a 500-600 volume, for not too much money. David

  • Hi Powerdoc, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that ATI themselves were coming out with a X1900 version specifically for the G5s - apparantly not quite as quick as the BTO one in the Mac Pros, but nearly. Sorry, but I don't have a link... David
  • I think this really died out with the cube or the 20th anniversary Mac. Even though I'd buy a TAM just to look at if I had the cash, the current iMac really is the same, only much, much better. David
  • If both drives are not bus powered, there shouldn't be a problem. But we all know that there can be a big difference between principle and reality... David

  • Unless you're daisychaining 20 of them, does FW800 really give any benefit over FW400? David
  • Does Tucano do one - I like the neoprene one for my 12" Powerbook. David
  • If you don't need portablity, the iMac is by far the best bang for your buck. A decent graphics card, larger screen and a desktop HD make it the best Mac after the Mac Pro. David
  • There's a seagate one, and that even goes up to 750GB. But I'm not sure if it does FW800, and it does look butt ugly. David
  • The x3000 is going to be a decent improvement on current integrated graphics, but expect it to be no better than the bottom rung of dedicated cards. (e.g. X1300) David
  • The mini should do all that fine, but you must remember that it is essentially a laptop without a screen, which means a fair few comprimises: slower, smaller laptop HD, and integrated graphics. Also, get the core Duo - it'll seem miles faster. D…
  • I'm pretty sure that Apple Expo France has been used a few times to intro new hardware. I think that the first generation of 15" Al powerbooks were announced there. David
  • In my opinion, you should go back to the store you bought it from and explain in a quiet and disappointed manner that it's not fit for use. If that doesn't work, creating a loud 'I'm not leaving without a new MacBook' scene should do it. If you ha…
  • As far as the screen goes, it's a simple balance of what Apple can procure for the target price point. They got rid of the CRT, and the 15"LCD, and now 20" displays seem to be frefalling in price, so they may decide that there is no point keeping …
  • I'm a bit disillusioned with the Mac Pro announcement, but one thing does bode well for the other product ranges. They so easily could have created a basic stock 2.0Ghz config for $1999, but didn't, deciding to go with the 2.66 for the 'standard' c…
  • Thanks very much for the explanation. It's strange that we're happy to think of visual data in discrete pulses (i.e. frames per second), but doing it for sound is something I hardly ever think of. Anyhow, let's hope that someone who has a Macboo…
  • Don't have a Macbook, but if you just said what I thought you said - Kudos! I'd go a very long way for sound quality, but surgery... Out of interest, can I ask how well the implant works - especially if you have had a decent previous level of he…
  • I doubt that it will, since the Mac Pro SATA drives plug directly into the motherboard in the caddy, without any cables. Add something in between, and the machine won't close up. David
