I would find it very hard to believe that apple didn't prototype many different designs so they could evaluate the drawbacks and benefits of each before committing on a final design.

With Apple these days "Jaw-Dropper" could mean anything from "It is the best thing ever and will eat Avid's lunch" to "It looks like an iOS App and Apple wants a 30% of the box office take on any movie we edit with it."

While it does reuse some of the iPad UI It doesn't look like a full on iOS coup of the desktop. It doesn't look bad but until I use it in person I will reserve final judgement.
