From the 'Save as...' window there should be a tick box, 'Append file extension'. I think this is off by default and needs to be on. The Windows version of Word likes to have it's .doc at the end of a file.

Have you logged into Win98 with the same username and password as the account you created on the OSX server? Win98 uses the current login username/password for all servers you try connect to - it's pretty hopeless on a network. Other than that…
