At this rate, I bet $10 an open source solution will be available before Apple releases its "official" HD-DVD/Blueray product. They have yet to ship anything with HDCP, Bueray or HD-DVD drives, and Apple shows no hint of AACS. However, HD-DVD …

I would use MacTheRipper to copy them to your hard drive. But a whole collection would take a heck of a lot of room. If you want to burn them, you run into a problem. Rips are usually larger than DVD-R's. There is no easy, free way to re-compr…

Um, just because it is confusing (for me too) Handbrake = MediaFork.

I did the exact same here. You can use a program called MediaFork to compress the video. I spent $2000+ on my DVD collection and there is no way in heck I will bring those disks on a college campus.

last I heard infrared was removed long ago. At least IRDA. My Powerbook has one and I think it was disabled ever since I upgraded to to OS X.

Actually I gotta nix that Tech Tool Pro recommendation. I find Disk Warrior much more reliable, but it only repairs drives. TTP has some other neat features, but royally screwed a drive a while back. Prettymuch the common order of disk repai…

That is pretty suspicious. More like a spamming script's default values.

Many applications have growl support built in. Others can use growl via a plugin. It looks like the latest version of Yahoo messenger has built in support so all you would need to do is install Growl, click "start growl" in the System Preference…

Ahh, that DV camera idea is pretty resourceful. I used to have a Hollywood DV bridge and that worked well with final cut pro. (It even let my computer control my VCR using timecode!) As for the EyeTV thing, it is a powerful piece of software th…

The Elgato EyeTV Hybrid can do that for the most part. You can plug your device into it and has very little lag. You can record, but there are copyright protection on DVD's so I am guessing those won't work. Using the EyeTV software that comes wi…

Problem is to encode a DVD, you have to pay royalties so that knocks out a lot of the free apps. There are countless DVD burning programs, but you still have to create the files. I think FFMPEGX can do the conversion however it is not a user frien…

I am from a little island called Ebbytopia in the Pacific. I started it so the RIAA can't legally sue me. But my minions do my dirty work in the states.

Cool site. In that case I would get the largest screen iMac, a middle-to-low Mac Pro, or a high end G5 on sale. Lots of RAM will help a lot but keep in mind it is cheaper to buy 3rd party RAM and install it yourself. I have a Dual G5 with 3.5GB…

Well... don't leave us hanging... If you want a comparison, I'd say iMac for general use.
