Ev erything I've read today says....

'Nuttin to the story. There's no Rivian partnership in the works.

  • Apple's 'Crush' iPad Pro ad sparks intense backlash from creatives

These people have to be kidding.

Are they so insecure that even a CGI animation triggers them to this sort of stupidity?   Okay... yes, I know the answer...lol.

Insecurity? In fairness, I've seen many an ad or video promotion from some Apple competitor triggering fans here.

  • Secret Apple 'Project ACDC' to pioneer AI chips for data centers

Perhaps Apple has had its sights set on competing with NVIDIA all along.  Not only might the best AI chips be reserved for Apple servers, but powerful GPU component of Apple Si may compete favorably with NVIDIA.

A lesser competitive chip line might be sold to 3rd parties like Microsoft, Google and other cloud providers and automakers to use  competitively against NVIDIA.

Meanwhile Apple reserves the best chips for themselves on their devices and on their servers.

I say this as the only knock on ASi has been  NVIDIA dedicated GPUs beating ASi integrated GPUs. That would seem a gap worth filling and exceeding. The bonus is adding chip sale as an enterprise albeit competitive yet not as good as chips reserved for Apple’s own use.
Google, Microsoft, and Amazon would not desire nor need Apple's chips, assuming they decide to pursue it as the rumors indicate. Those companies are already using their own in-house designed AI-focused server chips, in some cases matching or exceeding what NVIDIA's H100 offers.

In any event, and again assuming Apple actually follows though with an AI server chip for its data centers, it won't be in competition with NVIDIA. What Apple envisions is a chipset to run AI services, while NIDIA's is for both training and running an LLM for Generative AI.

BTW, Project ACDC is short for Apple Chips in Data Center. Creative :)

  • Apple's new Photos app will utilize generative AI for image editing

Android has had this feature already.
Interesting to see if this Apple one will be superior.
To be clear, iPhone has this ability too. It's not an operating system level thing. Apps can provide the feature and even Apple's Photos app for Mac has a basic repair tool already.

The Clean Up feature will be a more advanced model based on generative image processing -- which I believe is only available via apps like Adobe's and is not a part of Android's photo editing tools.
The Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones use a generative AI feature called Magic Editor in the Google Photos app.  It uses generative AI to make edits like repositioning and/or resizing a subject, erasing elements, changing lighting and backgrounds, repair/replace gaps that occur during editing, and changing sky tones and color.

  • Siri for iOS 18 to gain massive AI upgrade via Apple's Ajax LLM

This could be a problem for Google and Microsoft, because their AI services are all done online

Nope. These things are on-device using Google AI:

    • Gemini Nano: Google's most efficient AI model for on-device tasks, which powers features like:
      • Summarize in Recorder: Summarizes recorded conversations, interviews, and presentations without a network connection
      • Smart Reply in Gboard: Suggests high-quality responses to save time
    • Magic Eraser: Erases larger objects and people from photos without leaving traces
    • Read aloud: Reads news articles aloud in English or another language
    • Transcription: Transcribes recorded conversations and identifies the two speakers
    • Summarizing audio recordings in the Recorder app
    • Generative AI reply suggestions in chat apps like WhatsApp
    • An enhanced Magic Eraser that generates new pixels to fill in spaces left by removed objects
    • Best Take:  A photo editing feature that combines similar photos into one, allowing users to select their favorite expressions for each person in the photo.
    • Magic Audio Eraser: Removes unwanted background noise from videos on the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro

So while some are done online, the resource-intensive Video Boost for instance, most of the AI features introduced with the Pixel 8 are done privately on the user's phone rather than sent to Google to accomplish. That makes Google's current use of on-device AI processing similar to the rumored integration of AI features on this fall's Pro iPhones.

However, if the reports are accurate, not all of Apple's AI features can be accomplished on-device. The more advanced features will still need cloud assistance.
