  • Apple grabs its chance to tell users about push notification privacy

    chasm said:

Look at what Apple has done once it was free to reveal this practice, versus what Google has done or said (effectively, nothing). Look at Apple’s Legal Process Guidelines (link in the article, ffs) to educate yourself about your rights versus the government’s duty to protect the innocent and prosecute criminals, since you clearly have never done so.

Before making statements you think should be accepted as facts, you should have looked. They aren't. Like with the Senator, now that you've brought it up:

"Google, meanwhile, said in a statement that it was "the first major company to publish a public transparency report sharing the number and types of government requests for user data we receive, including the requests referred to by Sen. Wyden".

"For U.S. requests of push notifications and other non-content information, Google said it requires a court order that is subject to judicial oversight, not just a subpoena. With such orders, federal officials must persuade a judge that the requested data is relevant and material to an ongoing criminal probe."

In comparison, Apple may comply with the subpoena without requiring a court order according to the Apple Legal Process Guidelines you pointed to.

  • Apple TV+ may bundle with Paramount+ to cut subscriber losses

    chasm said:
I think an ad-supported tier would reduce churn more than bundling.  But these are both probably the future of streaming.
I can only speak for myself, but under ZERO circumstances will I go back to any ad-supported streaming service. Avoiding stupid commercials was the ENTIRE reason I left cable and never looked back.

The fact that subscribing to any — let’s say four — streaming services at the ad-free level is STILL cheaper than cable means I’m enjoying television more, and getting FAR better quality shows into the bargain.
And we agree. There are programs I'll watch on live tv and tolerate commercials only because I have to. Sporting events, certain specials, live local news, and a few very old shows on Pluto my wife and I enjoy.   Otherwise, I pay to avoid ads because I can.

  • A bride-to-be discovers a reality-bending mistake in Apple's computational photography

Sorry folks. This is totally fake. No way 'computational photography' produced this.
I know what you mean. It doesn't need computational photography to occur. This effect can happen on a 35mm film SRL with a horizontal focal plane shutter: if the subject moves as the shutter is travelling horizontally across to expose the film. I believe the iPhone has a rolling shutter — same thing.
While it does have a rolling shutter, you could not slow the shutter speed enough and still avoid blurring and distortion to produce such disparate images in a single photo. IMO this is purely due to computational photography combining the best parts of several images captured from a single shutter press. Typical rolling shutter from an SLR or ILC does not produce this effect in a single photo.

Sidenote: A reminder that what we see from our smartphone cameras may not always accurately present the scene. Sony and Leica, along with the other camera manufacturers following soon, specifically include markers to authenticate photos as being unadulterated, and for very good reasons.

  • Apple and Goldman Sachs to part ways on Apple Card, no successor named

I don't know if there are statistics out but I would make a bet that AppleCard users have higher incomes and are smarter with their money than the average credit card consumer. This would be a loss in an industry that survives only on high interest rates charged when people f-up or don't pay their entire bill on time. The high-yield savings rate and instant cash back rewards loses these banks money when their customers are actually responsible by paying their bills on time and not spending beyond their means.
Being approved for an AppleCard is not evidence of being financially well-off or a better credit risk. GS financial statements shows a higher-than-industry-average default rate from the cardholders, actually in the range of sub-prime issuers.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2022/09/12/goldmans-gs-apple-card-business-has-a-surprising-subprime-problem.html
That indicates Apple Card owners are not smarter with their money, despite expectations from some readers here.

Apple ran ads claiming the Apple Card wasn’t issued by a bank?
I'd like to see these ads.
    So would I.
To the best of my knowledge, they always acknowledged GS as the issuing bank.

    EDIT: Here's the original announcement
