It's pretty darn helpful in a room that you're frequently in. Ours is in the kitchen. In the morning I'll typically ask it to play the local news on YouTube TV while I'm fixing breakfast. We've both video chatted with our daughter on it while prepping dinner or cleaning up. Displaying a recipe is a regular thing, and we will occasionally query it, turn off lights in another room, or adjust the thermostat. We'll also pause the TV in the living room using it if we end up in the kitchen longer than we expected to be. Oh, and lest I forget It serves as a security cam when we're gone for the day. 

So yeah, it's useful. 

I've received several of these scammy texts over the past few months, as has my wife. I nearly fell for it the first time. I'm hopeful that the new scam detection tools rolling out to Pixel phones later this month addresses it, and I think it does.

That statement about Genmoji didn't come from Gruber AFAIK. It was from the AppleInsider editor. I'm fine with Gruber calling Apple out for a high-profile and widely marketed tent pole feature they've never been able to demo, and still can't present any evidence of it existing in any usable form. Everyone believed it was true just because Apple said it.
