  • Apple ordered to pay $838M for infringing Caltech Wi-Fi patents

If Apple loses on appeal, that would set a precedent where all manufacturers are then responsible for vetting their vendors’ compliance with patents related to THEIR products? Instead of fixing the patent system, let’s break it some more! CalTech’s response to the judgement makes it sound like they know it would put another break in the system, but don’t really care, since it would line their pockets in a big way. How long until we, as downstream customers, are liable for infringement because we failed to audit patent compliance of every seller and manufacturer of every component involved the products of any kind we purchase from ANY company? Think about your car, or all the products used to make the home you live in, like ranges, refrigerators, HVAC systems. Sounds like a nightmare to me.

  • Cortana iOS app to go dark in Australia, UK, Canada on January 31

Interesting! I got a message on the Xbox One just today, announcing the end of the Cortana app on the XBox as well, and I'm in "the states." I'm thinking Canada, UK and Australia are only the beginning of the end except for Office 365, er, "Microsoft 365". I was worried when Cortana was released what they were going to do about Cortana's 'rampancy" that occured in the Halo series of games—tongue in cheek of course.

  • Qualcomm seeks $31 million in damages from Apple in California patent suit

To quote an old commercial, "Look! It's the Goodrich blimp!" at the starting line of a race. Misdirection and obfuscation. I agree that Qualcom should be looking at Intel if they believe Intel is infringing their IP. It emphasizes Qualcom is going after the deepest pockets, not the supposed perpetrators of IP injustice.

  • Cellebrite iPhone hacking tools selling on eBay for as little as $100

…and the FBI wanted a backdoor into iOS because they knew they could keep the code safe from evildoers. As stated above, “making Tim Cook’s point.”

  • Steve Jobs wanted ultra-optimized US manufacturing, Apple vets say

When I was certifying with the American Production and Inventory Control Society, we were taught that W. Edward Deming taught the principles of Statistical Process Control to Japanese scientists and engineers when American manufacturers, flush from victories in WWII, were arrogantly unenthusiastic about applying SPC to our own factories. That was between 1945 and 1950, though the principles of SPC were known here since the 1920's. You might say they took somethng we invented and discarded, then spanked us with it over the sixty plus years.
