Proof that copying and executing a good idea is better than buying one. Apple better watch out with their 30 plus acquisitions a year.

There are a number of self healing coatings. I am most familiar with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) based paint protection films (PPF) primarily used to protect automotive paint from rock chips and scratches. (Work in R&D for PPF coating and manufacturing company.) The base TPU film is 175 microns (7 mil, 0.007”) thick and has a thin (13 micron, 0.5 mil, 0.0005”) self healing urethane coating applied to it. These films are optically clear and nearly invisible when installed. Some self heal with heat, others heal at room temperature. I have used these protection films on my iDevices since the ip3gs to protect both the back and screen.

There are a couple of negative with these films:
    1. While optically clear they are typically not perfectly smooth resulting in some level of optical distortion when applied to a transparent substrate.
    2. TPU films are soft and prone to impressions with any prolonged contact (think keys pressing against phone in your pocket.) Impressions are caused by the PPF TPU being soft and thick. Thinner self healing urethane coatings or when applied directly to a smooth surface may result in  a smoother surface.
    3. Urethane is porous and prone to staining. (Can be mitigated with a hard coat but that reduces the self-healing properties.)
    4. No anti-reflective properties. Visible reflection is about the same as glass, 8%.
